While there are many reasons people suffer (most are self-made or bad decisions or external in nature), the type of suffering referred to in Dark Night of the Soul has a clear and definite purpose. The purpose is your soul growth.
Although the lines between Dark Night of the Soul (DNOS) and general suffering are blurry, there are some important differences.
- DNOS is mostly in your soul vs. suffering is mostly in your head
- DNOS is directly related to soul’s purpose and one's destiny vs. suffering is not necessarily related to your purpose or destiny
- DNOS is divine influenced, no real remedy exists vs. suffering is usually manmade or external in nature, remedy is generally known
- DNOS is not easily alleviated vs. suffering can be alleviated with therapy, medication, social support, emotionally healthy habits
- DNOS causes exponential spiritual growth vs. suffering can help you grow, but depends on the person
- DNOS is caused by anything and in accordance with divine timing vs. suffering is caused by external factors that can be random
- DNOS is not easy to explain, very few can relate to you vs. suffering is easily explainable and people can relate to your experiences
- DNOS makes you the best version of yourself vs. suffering can make you a better person, but it depends on the person
