    Description

Robert: Left on the steps of a church as a baby, Robert was often hungry but never stole food like the other orphans in town. Introverted and extraordinarily intelligent, he knew all the Latin prayers and hymns by heart by the time he was five years old.

Georgette: Her own mother died in childbirth, leaving Georgette with a father who, seventeen at the time, had neither experience nor aptitude as a nurturing parent, and a brother known in town as Le Fuer - The Spitfire - for his terrible temper.

Perhaps to replace something missing from their own lives, both Robert and Georgette are drawn to the news of a crusader, twelve or thirteen, no older than themselves, travelling down through France with thousands of followers - all, unbelievably, children too.

Of those thousands, this is the incredible story of two. A story of hardship, loss and love.

Many reviews of book on Amazon

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read about New Love & Life's Choices
    June 10, 2011
    Format: Paperback
This is a good read for adults and a perfect book for young adults. While dealing with true events in historical times, it is all about the emotions and questions still encountered by teenagers today: Who am I? Where do my needs end and others' begin? How do I find independence without abandoning responsibilities? What empathy do I owe strangers? The book is about learning tolerance and responsibility; to admit error and determine right from wrong; to choose wisely in faith and love. The story concentrates on the journey, both literal and figurative, of the two main characters as they navigate new worlds, discovering how to deal with the loss of friends, faith, and certainty; while discovering tolerance, responsibility, empathy, new faith and real love. But the book also has a magnificent sweep: taking in the whole medieval world from peasant village to royal castle, from Paris to Marseilles, from parish church to the building of Notre Dame. It encompasses the clash of Religions: Catholic, Muslim, Jewish and even the precursors of Protestantism. It is full of both action and ideas. This is one of those rare books that teaches even as it enthralls. I recommend it very highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating

I found this book fascinating. It is based on a true episode in history that I vaguely knew about but I really had no idea how or why it happened, so I learnt a lot. The author brings this period to life, and not only is it a most holding read, but I have found myself mulling over it the last few days since I finished reading it. The author seems to have an incredible insight into human behaviour, particularly that of charismatic leaders. I'd say more about this but don't want to give the story away. I have recommended it to my three children as it is totally relevant today. I found myself racing through the book, as it is emotionally gripping - with both highs and lows, tender moments and ugly episodes. It is a great read for adults but I also highly recommend it for teenagers.

Crusade is a great book - read it over a couple days and really liked it. Characters are fascinating and story is totally engaging, especially if you like historical fiction. Two thumbs up.
