Very empowering audiobook

If you could sum up Calming the Emotional Storm in three words, what would they be?

helpful, empowering, hopeful

What does Mary Dominiak bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She adds energy to the content and makes it lively

Any additional comments?

Very helpful exercises I'll listen to again. The section I found most useful was "Don't Just React - Choose How to Act." The information on how to access your "wise self" was very empowering.

Hard to get past the narrator

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I think DBT is great and the author probably does a pretty good job of explaining the basics, but the narrator is awful! She has a very condescending way of reading, emphasizing in exactly the right places to make the reader cringe. One of worst narrations I've heard.

What did you like best about this story?

I think it would be a good book in print.

How could the performance have been better?

If narrator had kept in mind she was reading to adults.

Did Calming the Emotional Storm inspire you to do anything?

Make sure I don't purchase another audiobook narrated by this person.

A useful book that is not too long

What did you love best about Calming the Emotional Storm?

The chapters are reasonably short and helpful, with exercises you can use. The sentences are not hard to parse or overflowing but are simple to understand.

What does Mary Dominiak bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think comments about the narrator are misplaced. Her narration is diction perfect and upbeat. Doubtless the author listened to samples of her narration before picking her, so she is imparting the sort of experience the author intended. The important thing is how well the narrator conveys the author's intent. You will learn a lot!

Great book, condescending narration

Loved this book! The tips and helpful hints to combat emotional disregulation can be applied to daily life if you're willing to change.

The narration was horrendous. I thought previous reviews mentioning her style were just fastidious but I was mistaken. She reads as though the audience is filled with 4 year olds. No need to be patronizing. I almost stopped listening because of it.

Good information, very well read.

The reading was very nicely done, easy to understand and very appropriate expression, I felt. The author does not mince words and addresses many common, self defeating behaviors and how to become more aware of them for positive change.

A normalizing narrative that's easy to listen to

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - well organized, and written in a validating and normalizing way. As a psychologist, so many of the clients I see have emotional regulation difficulties underlying their current problems, so an important topic - not just for practitioners but for everyone.

Who was your favorite character and why?

NA

What does Mary Dominiak bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The reading is animated and vibrant enough to bring even the more didactic parts of the book to life. Clearly articulated and a comfortable pace for listening. Perhaps the best thing about Dominiak's narration is the clear interest she conveys for the material, which helped to sustain my own interest throughout.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but it felt like important material, which I think was the point.

Good Content - Need better reader

What did you like best about this story?

The content was excellent. Good scenarios and lots of Tools and Exercises.

What didn’t you like about Mary Dominiak’s performance?

Mary reads like a kindergarten teacher. I wanted to find a book for my adult children but they will never listen to this.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Upset that the reader was not more adult sounding. Appreciation for the content. Desire to buy the paper book.

Helpful and Thought Provoking

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For anyone wanting to approach their life from a new perspective, they should give Calming the Emotional Storm a listen. It'll give them tips, pointers, insights, and fresh ideas on how to approach their life. It'll make them pause and reconsider things they might not have otherwise. If you're looking for a way to change your view and how you go through your life, then this is the book for you.

What did you like best about this story?

Being shown new ways to approach my daily life with new perspective and understanding of my emotions that allows me to become mindful and well rounded as a person.

What about Mary Dominiak’s performance did you like?

Mary Dominiak's performance was clear and an easy listen. She captured the text with precision and made it easy to follow. Rather than simply listening to the text, I found myself absorbing it and thinking about it on another level as she read it. It became a richer text through her performance, giving it a depth I might not have had reading it silently. Dominiak made Calming the Emotional Storm a stronger text through her performance that not only made it easier to understand, but also made it connect on a human level. The manner in which she delivered it allowed it to become more like a conversation about our emotions rather than just a text being read. I felt as if she was sitting in the room with me conveying the information Calming the Emotional Storm provides---making me feel much more comfortable with the subject matter as a whole. I recommend Dominiak's performance of Calming the Emotional Storm and would love to hear more audio books from her.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Calming the Emotional Storm?

Remembering to bring mindfulness to my daily life. It'll help me bring some sense and calm to the chaotic situations that we all find ourselves in during the work day.

Calming??? OMG.... NOT! Terrible Narration

The narrator sounds like a cheerleader, INCREASING my stress, NOT decreasing it; talking SO fast, that I can''t even stay as calm as I was (n't), as the narration makes me MORE anxious.!!! Ugh. I want a refund.
