William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective and decides, much to his father’s dismay, that rather than become a barrister like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister Grace, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life: from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, Constable Fred Yates, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard’s arts and antiquities squad.

Description
If your dream is big enough, not even your enemies can stop you....
Charlie Trumper's earliest memory is of hearing his grandfather's sales patter from behind his costermonger's barrow. When Grandpa Charlie dies, young Charlie wants nothing more than to follow in his footsteps - his burning ambition is to own a shop that will sell everything: 'The Biggest Barrow in the World'.
Charlie's progress from the teeming streets of Whitechapel to the elegance of Chelsea Terrace is only a few miles as the crow flies. But in Jeffrey Archer's expert hands it becomes an epic journey through the triumphs and disasters of the century, as Charlie follows a thread of love, ambition, and revenge to fulfil the dream his grandfather inspired.

Outstanding
Love the characters which were made so full of life by John Lee, especially Mrs. Trentham, Daphne and the lawyer Baverstock. Could not resist listening at odd hours, while driving to work and even at the Gym - in the quest to know where the story leads.Gripping indeed! Great work by Archer and the narration simply compliments.

EXACTLY what I wanted
I was in the mood for a sweeping saga, and I knew Jeffery Archer was the perfect author to turn to. It was just the thing for my craving!
You have to know what you are signing up for when you settle into one of his books, there is very little dialogue and so I always feel like I am being told ABOUT a story as opposed to reading a story.. does that make sense?
Some constants about Jeffery Archer’s style:
•Very little dialogue
•More “telling” than “showing”
•Books that feel like a collection of short stories
•Somewhat predictable plots
•Many similarities to past books
But all this is good because if you know precisely what you’re going to get, you won’t be disappointed. I was entertained the entire way through!

Twice as good the second time around
I read this book years ago. It was a pleasure hearing it. Narrator John Lee really brought it to life. I've read most of Archer's books, this is one of his best. I promise you'll be hanging on to every word.

nicht zu empfehlender Sprecher
Der Sprecher hat mich mit seinem Versuch, die weinlichen Stimmen zu imitieren sehr genervt. Er klang immer wie eine Tunte. Schrecklich!!!
