Description
A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Come along with Evans as she looks for answers in the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor.
What is "biblical womanhood"...really?
Strong-willed and independent, Rachel Held Evans couldn’t sew a button on a blouse before she embarked on a radical life experiment - a year of biblical womanhood. Intrigued by the traditionalist resurgence that led many of her friends to abandon their careers to assume traditional gender roles in the home, Evans decided to try it for herself, vowing to take all of the Bible’s instructions for women as literally as possible for a year.
Pursuing a different virtue each month, Evans learned the hard way that her quest for biblical womanhood required more than a "gentle and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4). It meant growing out her hair, making her own clothes, covering her head, obeying her husband, rising before dawn, abstaining from gossip, remaining silent in church, and even camping out in the front yard during her period.
See what happens when a thoroughly modern woman starts referring to her husband as "master" and "praises him at the city gate" with a homemade sign. Learn the insights she receives from an ongoing correspondence with an Orthodox Jewish woman, and find out what she discovers from her exchanges with a polygamist wife. Join her as she wrestles with difficult passages of scripture that portray misogyny and violence against women.
In A Year of Biblical Womanhood, Rachel Held Evans shares her courageous and often humorous journey:
- Exploring what is a "woman’s place",
- Applying the Bible’s teachings to day-to-day life, sometimes to literal extremes,
- Focusing on virtues like domesticity, obedience, beauty, submission, and grace, and
- Developing a "Biblical Woman’s Ten Commandments" to serve as a guide for daily living.

What is the thesis?
interesting experiment but I was so confused. Between the journal readings and critiques of the journals and some literature about the topic..i didn't know where the author was trying to land. I didn't know what the take away was supposed to be and often paused to try to figure it out. I may have also been distracted by the sparky, cynical tone. its ok to be cynical and it seems thats her personality but it was very distracting for me as it framed my expectations of the final message leaving me in a constant negative attitude. yeah wanted to get much more from it than I did.

Inspired and inspirational
This has been one of my favorite reads for almost a decade, and I continue to return to it often. A balanced view of looking at womanhood through the eyes of the Old and New Testaments.
Rachel is certainly missed with her wit and wisdom and I often pray for Dan and the kids when thinking of this work.

Loved it!
The questions of what the Bible teaches about women, if there is such a thing as "biblical womanhood" and what roles women may or may not have in the church has been subject of countless discussions and disputes. I found this book a wealth of wisdom. It was fun and inspiring to read and I really enjoyed RHE's voice (figuratively and literally). I have written papers and taught workshops on the subject of women and the Bible, so I already knew quite a bit about the subjects raised in the book. Yet it never felt boring, only inspiring and uplifting. It was good for my mind and soul to listen to. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It's well researched, entertaining and thought provoking.
