The history of the Thousand Sons
There are 3 stories in this book which cover 3 major events of the the chapter. from where it was and how it came to be with some very interesting facts and turns. I quite enjoyed the book as a whole but I had a really hard time with the narrator. I hated the beginning because I couldn't stand the voice. The lack of tone impersonification of different characters at the beginning was horrible compared to the previous series. It got better over time and that's not just me getting used to the voice.

Awful narrator for a wonderful book
Sadly the narrator fails to do any justice to the book and its story.
He simply reads the book, without real tone or rythm - an instant where a character grabs a cup of recaf is narrated with the same intensity than when two primarchs are about to come to blows, every character sounds alike, save for Arhiman who sounds like a queasy old man that just got out of a beating, all throughout the book.
It's just.. plain old reading, emotionless and bland.
For fifteen hours.
The story, in and of itself, is wonderful and superbly written. Unless Audible re-edit this book with a better narrator, do yourself a favour and steer clear of this one. Get a Kindle version, anything but this.

Couldn't even finish it
I've heard that this was a good book, but the narrator did such a terrible job that it couldn't hold my attention past the first couple of chapters.
This is one that should be redone with a real professional narrator who can capture the essence of the 30k/40k verse. Toby Longworth, Jonathan Keeble, John Banks, Gareth Armstrong or David Timson are all much better narrators, far superior to Martyn Ellis.

Horrible narrator made me stop listening
What did you like best about A Thousand Sons? What did you like least?
A book about the Burning of Prospero and the Thousand Sons!
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I couldn't make it to the ending because the mewling, nasally voice of the narrator made me abandon the book after 2.5 chapters. He makes every character, men and women alike, sound like simpering, whiny children after they've been scolded.
How could the performance have been better?
Get a different narrator, preferably Toby Longworth who can actually capture the spirit and mood of the 41st Millennium.
Was A Thousand Sons worth the listening time?
Considering I couldn't make it through the book, I really can't say.

Looks like I'll be getting the kindle version
Got about 5 chapters in before giving up. I can't really comment on how the book is yet, but the narrator really isn't very good.
Compared to the likes of Toby Longworth, David Timson and Gareth Armstrong, Martyn Ellis just doesn't shape up.
I'm sure there are books where his particular way of speaking is perfectly acceptable, but it is not here. I will be refunding this one and urge anyone that wants to read Thousand Sons to just get it on kindle instead.

Narrator doesn't do it justice
I've been going through the Horus heresy series, and it was tough to listen to this. I think as the rest of the series the narrator is slower in pace and has a more baritone pitch this throws you off.

get a better narrator!
So out of all the 40k books ive listened to or read this one took the longest. the names of characters were too complex that they did not even seem human and this made following certain events confusing. but what reallky made it difficult to finish this Audio book was the narrator. the only change of voice he used for different characters was an increase in his volume, so it sometimes leaves you wondering as to whos talking.

One of the best written but saddest of the series
I loved everything about the book, the narrator, in my opinion is actually very good, I can understand why it's not for everyone but I liked it.
The overall tone of the book is hopeful, innocent and arrogant but it fits how my favorite legion acted. The whole time the legion is so close to showing their worth but to get shot down at every turn, and when things are at their worst, their actions were greater than anyone elses under their circumstance but it's just so sad how Horus pushed them into betrayal. They were so close to being the good guys, it's so sad...

It could've been great
As with many books in the horus heresy, this book suffers from an excess of fluff. The beginning hours of this audible were a slog to get through. The narrator had a hard time differentiating the voices in the first part of the book and the first 3.5 to 4 hours of the story were dull.
That being said...The book really picked up after they left that first planet. After that I got hooked and the narrator seemed much more confident and invested after this point as well. By the end, he was a terrific narrator, he just needed some time to get there. I was at work and just let the first four hours play in the background. After that the story went into high gear and I found myself listening to it in the car, in my living room, and even while I cooked. I had to know what happened next. It was also nice to see events we have been hearing about for a long time, like the Council of Niccea, Magnus's big mistake, and the battle on Prospero.
In the end, I absolutely loved it, but the beginning was so bad I almost quit this book.

Great book, mediocre narrator
The book itself is rather interesting and develops well, but the narrator seems to think that shouting is a good substitute for emphasis and cadence. If you can stomach the first few chapters though you sill grow accustomed to it and it will not bother you in unraveling the fate of tue thousand sons.

I felt grief for the fate of this legion
I never liked the 1000 sons, after listening to this novel, I truly love them.
They are my favored legion due to their noble intent and their to human failure.
I felt sorrow while listening to their faith.

good, but not outstanding
An overall good novel, but it pales in comparison with other entries in the HH series. The descriptions of Marines and their powers seems repetitive and the choice of words is clunky at times. Still definitely enjoyable and since it covers such pivotal moments on the lore, I definitely recommend it.

Interesting tale, expandable characters
The story about Magnus the red is a thrilling tale with big battles, many insights about the warp and the thousand sons.
While Magnus and the human side characters are well described and developed I did not connect with the Astartes protagonists. sadly they seemed quite interchangable, which is problematic when they have to carry a lot of the drama.
