Female narrator not that good

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Better female narrator

Would you be willing to try another book from Bella Forrest? Why or why not?

Yes - story was okay

What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?

Overall voice - too hard to listen to for a long period of time

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Shade of Blood?

More interaction between the characters and less emotional thoughts of each

Good narration, slow story

I like the voices of the narrators, they do a great job capturing the feelings of the characters.
However, I feel like nothing happened in the story. It dragged. The revelation at the epilogue was the most interesting thing to happen.

Addictive

No human has ever left the Shade alive. Now, after weeks of captivity on the sunless vampire island, Sofia is given the choice: stay, and remain with her beloved Derek Novak as his human slave; or return to her life with Ben and have some chance of normality. Can she live with the choice she must make?

Book 2 continues the series exactly where book 1 left off. If there’s one thing that jars me a little when reading this series, it’s that there are no clearly defined beginnings and endings to each of the novels. Each book seems far too short and ends abruptly, leaving you hanging, wondering what is next. Sheer genius of Bella Forrest, I think. I know that as readers, we like tidy little packages with all the ends neatly ribboned off, but when you’re reading a series, there has to be a reason to move on to the next book, and Bella Forrest certainly knows how to provide that. So, I’ve made peace with this series by viewing it as one long book that has been broken down into smaller chunks. And it’s one of those fast-paced series you have to read from cover to cover!

Book two featured a greater variety of character’s POV. I particularly enjoyed this, since it gave depth to many of the characters that I felt was missing in book 1. Strangely enough, I relished Lukas’ POV, it was just fresh and unusual to see things from the POV of the villain.

The emotional intensity from the first book was heightened in this one. I felt that Derek’s ‘fall’ following Sofia’s decision made him more ‘human’ and ‘inhuman’ at the same time. The chemistry and intensity between Sofia and Derek remained intact and there was some lovely character development all round, including for Ben.

This is definitely an addictive series.

Not so great narration

Every narrator speaks with a sort of "tune" and the good ones vary the tune throughout their narration to add drama and interest. Unfortunately, the female narrator in this recording followed the same up and down rhythmic pattern through almost the entire book. It made the dramatic parts seem dull and the more calm parts silly, as though being told by an overly dramatic teenage cheerleader.

Didn't think the narrators fit the characters

I LOVE this series. And things just got "real" in this book. I'm excited to see what happens next. However, while the narrators were great, I didn't think they were appropriate for the characters. Ben's guy sounded too old to be a teenager. That's my only complaint and I still wouldn't want it to deter you from listening. This is a great series.

Good follow up

This is definitely a YA series however I am definitely hooked. The deep and emotional connection between the strong and confident Sofia and the brooding, dark, vampire Derek is intense and I love it. This audio was twice as long as the first and twice as good. The narrators once again did a fabulous job. The author really took you into the depth of emotions that the characters have developed and allowed them to make decisions I didn’t see coming. Those decisions lead to longing and heartache and have made me purchase Audio number three.

Better than the first

This book was much better than the first! Book one intrigued me enough to keep me reading, but this one brought out so much more of the story line. We learn about the history of the Shade, get a glimpse into Vivian and Derrik's pasts, we see beyond the beautiful penthouses and into the caves.

Did I mention a MASSIVE cliff hanger...?
Yes, the book is good, but the ending is mind blowing. No way can you finish this one and not immediately start book three!!

I'm fully invested in this series now. It's still a bit too young adult for my liking but the story is interesting enough that I just don't care. I can't wait to see how things play out in the future. There are so many wild cards. Ben, Lucas, the Hunters, the other Vampire Coven's... at some point they've all got to meet in the middle, and what will become of Derrik and Sofia then?

Boring

The first one was okay, and this one is pretty much terribly boring. i hated Emma Galvin's voice and Zachary Webber sounds like he really doesn't want to read this.

I loved the first book.

I really have enjoyed listening to how the author has developed her characters. My only hangup is how authors want to make every book a series. Instead of building to a crescendo in the plot...and then the end is closure. I have a feeling Bella Forrest likes to suck her readers into series. In doing so the we the readers are sucked into her never-ending....expensive series. I'm so done with Bella Forrest. It's pathetic how authors have changed so much since "TWILIGHT"

The First Audio Book I couldn't finish

What disappointed you about A Shade of Blood?

The main issue was the female narrator, Emma Galvin, she put all the accents in the wrong places and in one part when a vampire appeared unexpectedly she said the name in a quiet voice in a lower register, probably for impact. Had to rewind three times to work out who it was. Even had the book been narrated by someone else, the story dragged and I never really connected with any of the characters. Would not recommend this book

What could Bella Forrest have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story was written in the first person but with very little insights into their characters, they moved from one chapter to another without giving you many clues into how they reacted with those around them

What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?

She put accents in all the wrong places 'the ONLY place to BE would have BEEN by her side' kind of, I never got used to it

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Shade of Blood?

All the scenes were fine, just dragged out too far but having said that, the book was the same length as any of the Morganville Vampires and I loved those - I had to keep rewinding because I listened to a couple of chapters without taking in a single word
