À propos de cette écoute
When we think of France we often evoke images of fine food and wine, the elegant boulevards of Paris, the chic beaches of St Tropez. Yet, as the largest country in Europe, it is a place of huge diversity. The idea of 'Frenchness' emerged from over 2,000 years of history and it is a riveting story from Roman conquest to the present day.
Cecil Jenkins tells the story of the formation of this nation through its people, great events and culture. Through this narrative he charts why the French began to see themselves as so different from the rest of Europe and why, today, they face the same problems of identity as many other nations.

Yet, I was wrong. Not only the story is complete, covering all the periods from the origins of the peoples in the area to the politics of the XXI century, but it's also still very far from a condensed, raw fact sheet. There is a lot of digressions, side stories, cultural insights and all the other things that make it sound a bit like a fabular story - still giving the dates, names and logical consequences. Of course, the level of details won't be enough for the history nerds that should look for a more specific books.
The book also feels very neutral, whenever possible including the view of the same events by different parties, quotes or evidences - and therefore might be worth noting for those that learned the history at school, which often is a bit nationally biased.
Last but not least, the narrateur sets the whole new level of reading. It really feels as if he was there and is telling his own story now.
Hands down, the best produced book I've got from audible so far.
Great book, perfectly read and produced.
