Description
Welcome to Torte - a small-town family bakeshop where the coffee is hot, the muffins are fresh, and the cakes are definitely to die for....
It's autumn in Ashland, Oregon, - 'tis the season for a spiced hot apple cider with a serving (or two) of Torte's famous peach cobbler. It's also the perfect time for Jules Capshaw to promote her family's beloved bake shop by competing in The Pastry Channel's reality show, Take the Cake. The prize is $25,000. But as Jules quickly learns, some people would kill for that kind of dough. Literally.
Then, just as Jules dusts off her Bavarian Chocolate Cake recipe and cinches up her apron, the corpse of a fellow contestant is discovered - death by buttercream. What began as a fun, tasteful televised adventure has morphed into something of a true-crime detective show for Jules and everybody else on set. Who could have killed Chef Marco, and why? Can Jules sift out the killer before someone else gets burned?

Not the Strongest Character
My first listen by Ellie Alexander was a Sloan Krause mystery. I listened to all three books in no time flat.
I couldn't wait to go back and check out this series. Unfortunately, I struggled. I tried the second book because I liked the supporting characters and the premise of the series. But, I finally realized that I really don't like the lead character.
To be kind, she's beyond naive. For those who can relate, this is the series for you. But, Ms. Alexander's other series is one I can listen to over and over and over

Enjoying the series but...
I'm enjoying the series but it's hard to hear "Willamette" Valley mispronounced by a character that lives in Oregon! (I lived there for a decade). It's will-am-et and not will-uh-met.

This is ridiculous
What disappointed you about A Batter of Life and Death?
Too coy. The narrator is terrible, the same voice for every character
What was most disappointing about Ellie Alexander’s story?
Improbable. The added bit that a murder has happened before is just dropped in as if thought of much later.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dina Pearlman?
I don't know.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No. I want to send it back
Any additional comments?
Just terribly disappointed. I listened to a bit of it, liked that it was set in Ashland, Oregon, But my expectations were not met in any way.

Fun Whodunit in a Bake Shop
Set in Ashland, Oregon, the story is about Jules Capshaw and her family's bakeshop, Torte and how they will, hopefully manage to keep things running, with some major upgrades (including replacing an industrial oven) are needed. When the opportunity to compete in a national competition hosted by The Pastry Channel’s show, Jules decides to enter. But when one of the competing baker's is murdered, all bets are off . . . until Jules decides to hunt for the killer herself. Great fun in a cozy mystery.

Great read and even better listen!
Overall I’d give this book 4.5 stars because it’s a well-written, light-hearted bakeshop mystery. It has a hint of approaching romance that draws you the next book in the series. If you’re looking for something that not too in-depth, but satisfying you will enjoy book one and book two (this one). The storyline is somewhat predictable, but not so much that you will guess “Who did it?”.
