While she was out enjoying her senior prom, Sarah Brighwater's mother was murdered in their home. The serial killer was known to the police but never caught. Now, 15 years later, Sarah is an FBI agent in the Behavioral Science Unit tracking down killers like the one who killed her mother. When a new string of murders begins and bodies are dumped near her old home town, Sarah wonders about the reemergence of her lifelong tormentor. Could it be him?

FBI Agent Sarah Brightwater and journalist Tyler Ford must team up once more to stop the evil machinations of mass serial killer Dwight Spalding. Two sets of unrelated murders in Virginia begin to become entwined as Spalding's web begins to be unraveled. Sarah is working both cases but can't let the link be known for fear of being taken off them and losing her chance to catch the man who killed her mother. Tyler's involvement in the case become more personal than he imagined possible. Will he be able to escape the plans of the vile murderer who is using him a plaything?

Sarah and Tyler continue their efforts to reel in the mass serial killer, Dwight Spalding. As they do so, another horrific case comes to light. Five men had been murdered all in the exact same manner. There are five suspects, one for each crime. None has a motive and none could have carried out any more than one of the slayings. Sarah and Tyler are mixed up in the case, but this time one of them has a lot more to lose than ever before, who holds the secrets?
