Sophie is at work on Friday morning, when the power goes out. As she waits for it to be restored, she notices that her fully charged cell phone won’t turn on. A horrifying thought crosses her mind, and she runs to look out the window. The street is full of cars that are all stalled, and people milling around looking at their non-working cell phones. She realizes that this is much worse than a simple power outage, and that she must act quickly if she wants to survive.

Sophie and Jeb begin their new life together just months after an EMP hits the United States, destroying the grid and transportation system. Sophie survived the first days, walking home 58 miles from Birmingham, Alabama. Now she and Jeb are building a new life in this new world along with his family. They are sheltered in their rural community and have been spared many of the hardships that the rest of the country has faced, but how long will that continue, and will they be ready to face all the challenges ahead?

Jeb and Sophie welcome a new little Shepherd into the family nearly three years after an EMP changes the world. The community surrounding the family farm is growing and thriving in this new world and they are comfortable until they see the planes.
