The story revolves around a young man who becomes obsessed with an abandoned crypt. Originally built to house the members of a powerful local family, the crypt was abandoned after a fire consumed the family’s home and compelled them to move away. Despite living in the local area and having an entirely different surname, the narrator of the story claims some spurious relation to the powerful family. With this obsession ingrained he starts to spend his nights loitering outside the crypt and dreaming up ways of gaining access.

A vile affliction, the Red Death, a disease that kills rapidly with a seizure and bleeding from the pores. Torturing and scarring the land. But Prince Prospero is neither affected nor intimidated. More and more of his subjects die by the day. But still he fears not. He does however gather his friends and acquaintances, locking himself and his retinue away in a fortified abbey built with seclusion in mind. Time progresses and the Red Death is now at it's height. The Prince decides to host a masked ball to ease everyone's fears.
