The Battle of Talavera was a great success, but not the fatal blow many had hoped for. Now the French move to encircle the British army in Spain. A gruelling and disheartening withdrawal to Portugal is the only course of action to save the army. The enemy must be slowed if there is to be any hope of victory on the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish forces must be supported to continue the fight, and Craven is selected to go to their aid. Tasked with delivering desperately needed weapons to the Spanish guerrillas, Craven must run the gauntlet to urgently deliver the weapons against all odds.

The French have captured the Spanish fortified city of Ciudad Rodrigo and the third invasion of Portugal has begun. The only barrier between Wellington’s army and the huge French invasion force is the fortress of Almeida, but a spy inside the city threatens to force the garrisons surrender before the British army is strong enough to meet the French in battle, with half of Wellington’s force consisting of untested Portuguese troops. Craven and Ferreira are sent to hunt the spy, but soon enough the army must stand and fight.

When the French find a path through the mountains to outflank the entrenched Anglo Portuguese army at Bussaco there is no choice but to continue the retreat to Lisbon. Craven and the Salford Rifles are tasked with slowing the enemy advance but soon they will have their backs to the sea. More than sixty thousand French troops descend on the Portuguese capital where the fate of British army will be decided. But even as the French columns approach, Craven receives news that an old enemy is nearby, and he must choose between seeking revenge and standing beside his men.

In Egypt, all things are possible. So discovers Albion Stanley, a recent Cambridge graduate and brilliant linguist, newly arrived in Cairo in 1902. Albion sees the unseen, including ghosts. It is a less than comfortable reality, which he tends to with copious amounts of whiskey and numerous other vices. Also in Cairo is Aleister Crowley, the famed occultist. Aleister is a dangerous man, but not an unsympathetic one and never a dull one. Together, they discover the world of dead Egyptians, some of whom are older than the pyramids.

Disillusioned healer Blackthorn and her companion, Grim, have settled in Dalriada to wait out the seven years of Blackthorn's bond to her fey mentor, hoping to avoid any dire challenges. But trouble has a way of seeking out Blackthorn and Grim. Lady Geiléis, a noblewoman from the northern border, has asked for the prince of Dalriada's help in expelling a howling creature from an old tower on her land - one surrounded by an impenetrable hedge of thorns.

The heads of the Collegia are afraid that coming back to his known haunt is going to give him less protection than if he went into hiding.
