Henry Miller was one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century literature. Better known in Europe than in his native America for most of this career, he achieved international success and celebrity during the 1960s when his banned "Paris" books - beginning with Tropic of Cancer - were published here and judged by the Supreme Court not to be obscene. Until then he had toiled in relative obscurity and poverty.

Everyone who writes about Henry Miller begins by taking a side. Either he was a liberator who tore the last Victorian veil off human life, or he was a vulgar egotist who mistook his own appetites for wisdom. This book refuses both chairs at that tired table. It proposes something stranger and more useful: that Miller was never really a writer at all, and that the question of whether to admire him has been distracting us for eighty years from the one thing he was genuinely good for.

Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer chronicles the bawdy adventures of a young expatriate writer, his friends, and the characters they meet in Paris in the 1930s with unapologetic gusto, and is now considered, as Norman Mailer said, ""one of the ten or twenty great novels of our century."" The...

Some of the most rewarding pages in Henry Miller's books concern his self-education as a writer. He tells, as few great writers ever have, how he set his goals, how he discovered the excitement of using words, how the books he read influenced him, and how he learned to draw on his own experience.

In his great triptych The Millennium, Bosch used oranges and other fruits to symbolize the delights of Paradise. Whence Henry Miller's title for this, one of his most appealing books; first published in 1957, it tells the story of Miller's life on the Big Sur, a section of the California coast where he lived for 15 years. Big Sur is the portrait of a place - one of the most colorful in the United States - and of the extraordinary people Miller knew there.

Daisy Miller is a young American girl travelling Europe with her mother and younger brother. While in Vevey, Switzerland, she becomes acquainted with Frederick Winterbourne, an idle expatriate, of well-to-do Americans. Winterbourne, who observes and critiques young Daisy through their brief acquaintanceship, is infatuated with her irreverent behavior. Daisy flaunts society's rules and uncompromising standards; she is charming, spontaneous, and unpretentious, and her audacity shocks the Europeans, who consider her an uncultivated flirt. The sophisticated Winterbourne remains smitten with Daisy, but his classical values stand in his way.
