We haven’t had a Spooky Linings month in quite some time around here, but we do this season, and we’re using it to discuss a very odd anthology film with 2019’s The Mortuary Collection. Interesting visuals and fun setups unfortunately don’t pay off in most of the segments, and there are clear indications of a green director behind most scenes. That being said, there are some genuinely great moments in this movie, so make sure you grab protection and lock your doors as we rip into this one plus discuss such topics as applying for jobs you’re overqualified for, blending meals, the prophecy and etymology of “67”, and confronting our returning guest Michael Moss about the Hamnet trailer.

The Mortuary Collection stars Barak Hardley, Jacob Elordi, Brennan Murray, Ema Horvath, Michael Bow, Anthony Fontana, and Tristan Byon. Directed by Ryan Spindell.

While you may have loved Hereditary and Midsommar, Beau is Afraid was certainly the litmus test for fans of horror master Ari Aster. Is a movie about anxiety, paranoia, guilt, absurdity, and possibly even neurodivergence enough to justify one of A24’s largest blank checks ever? That’s for you to decide. While some of us loved and others did not, there’s no denying the hilarious comedy and stellar production design in this bizarre movie. So make sure you have a bottle of water and a can of paint close by as we join Beau on his outrageous adventure, plus discuss those old D.A.R.E. ads, the bygone era of Moviefone, how Millennials always seem to get blamed for everything, and so much more with returning guests Brandi Dewberry and Jenn Paulemon.

Beau is Afraid stars Joaquin Phoenix, Patti Lupone, Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Kylie Rogers, Denis Ménochet, Parker Posey, Zoe Lister-Jones, Armen Nahapetian, Julia Antonelli, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Richard Kind, Hayley Squires, and Bradley Fisher. Directed by Ari Aster.

While Sinners and One Battle After Another were duking it all awards season earlier this year, a lot of the other films up for Best Picture and multiple other categories got left out of the conversation; Hamnet was unfortunately one of them. Beautifully tragic performances, impeccable direction, and a score that would make even the toughest man weep, this movie is so much more than “emotional manipulation”. If you only gave it the once over or put off seeing it, this is your sign to marvel at the performances of Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, and Jacobi Jupe as well as Chloé Zhao’s incredible vision of the lives of young Agnes and Will. In our episode we break down the film, plus discuss Oscar “villains”, the original aura farming fashion accessory, Nathan’s pitch for an adult entertainment parody of Backrooms, and so much more.

Hamnet stars Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, Jacobi Jupe, Noah Jupe, and Joe Alwyn. Directed by Chloé Zhao.

Time travel, destiny, and predetermination – it’s all on display in 2014’s Predestination. A small film with big ideas riding on the coattails of Primer, Inception, and a lot of other time related movies that came before it, there’s so much to unpack in what essentially is two movies attached at the hip to one another. So grab your favorite bottle of scotch and get ready for twist after twist as we try to unravel the mystery of who The Unmarried Mother is, plus topics like our…unique rules for time travel, Australian currency exchange rates, boob-shaped bells, and so much more await in our “last” episode of the show. We are Forrest Gump, we carry the flame!

Predestination stars Christopher Kirby, Noah Taylor, Sarah Snook, Ethan Hawke, and Madeleine West. Directed by Michael & Peter Spierig.

So join us in the cemetery as we tear into the movie, plus our thoughts on the upcoming Street Fighter reboot, Dave Mustaine’s only good lyric, one of the funniest movie titles of all time, and so much more with returning guest James Stacey.

10 years ago today, we began our journey building a playlist of films with cliffhanger, downbeat, and upsetting endings with the caveat of discovering a silver lining for each and every one. In this anniversary special, we’re looking back at the podcast’s journey to make it to this incredible milestone, revisiting some unforgettable moments, and celebrating everything in our show’s legacy. We hope you enjoy this enormous episode.

Thank you so much for all of your support over the past decade. We look forward to many more years of covering some of cinema’s bleakest endings.

We’re taking a turn back into Korean cinema this week as we’re reviewing an absolute classic that’s still in IMDb’s Top 200 and Letterboxd’s Top 50 greatest films of all time. Memories of Murder isn’t a conventional murder mystery; it’s light and funny when it can be while also weaving a web of uncertainty and hopelessness, something only the great Bong Joon ho can accomplish. So slip into your Nice (not Nike) sneakers and look us in the eyes as we break open this film, plus discussions on how the ‘80s weren’t as glamorous as the movies try to make them out to be, the ineptitude of police detectives, an overabundance of flying jump kicks, and more.

Do you remember 2006’s The Breed? No? That’s okay, no one else does either. We’re uncovering a nothing of a movie to discuss, and it’s no wonder this thing has been lost to time. In 96 minutes of runtime, there’s only about 12 worth seeing. With that being said, our episode is jam packed, so strap in as we tear into this barely-a-movie flick, plus discuss the recent sequel (we couldn’t believe it either), the goofy as hell RC-3 Seabee, Pat Sajak’s greatest impression, Michelle Rodriguez as a Firestarter, DoesTheCatDie.com, and so much more.

The Breed (2006) stars Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning, Eric Lively, and Hill Harper. Directed by Nicholas Mastandrea.
