We haven’t had a Spooky Linings month in quite some time around here, but we do this season, and we’re using it to discuss a very odd anthology film with 2019’s The Mortuary Collection. Interesting visuals and fun setups unfortunately don’t pay off in most of the segments, and there are clear indications of a green director behind most scenes. That being said, there are some genuinely great moments in this movie, so make sure you grab protection and lock your doors as we rip into this one plus discuss such topics as applying for jobs you’re overqualified for, blending meals, the prophecy and etymology of “67”, and confronting our returning guest Michael Moss about the Hamnet trailer.

The Mortuary Collection stars Barak Hardley, Jacob Elordi, Brennan Murray, Ema Horvath, Michael Bow, Anthony Fontana, and Tristan Byon. Directed by Ryan Spindell.

While you may have loved Hereditary and Midsommar, Beau is Afraid was certainly the litmus test for fans of horror master Ari Aster. Is a movie about anxiety, paranoia, guilt, absurdity, and possibly even neurodivergence enough to justify one of A24’s largest blank checks ever? That’s for you to decide. While some of us loved and others did not, there’s no denying the hilarious comedy and stellar production design in this bizarre movie. So make sure you have a bottle of water and a can of paint close by as we join Beau on his outrageous adventure, plus discuss those old D.A.R.E. ads, the bygone era of Moviefone, how Millennials always seem to get blamed for everything, and so much more with returning guests Brandi Dewberry and Jenn Paulemon.

Beau is Afraid stars Joaquin Phoenix, Patti Lupone, Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Kylie Rogers, Denis Ménochet, Parker Posey, Zoe Lister-Jones, Armen Nahapetian, Julia Antonelli, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Richard Kind, Hayley Squires, and Bradley Fisher. Directed by Ari Aster.

While Sinners and One Battle After Another were duking it all awards season earlier this year, a lot of the other films up for Best Picture and multiple other categories got left out of the conversation; Hamnet was unfortunately one of them. Beautifully tragic performances, impeccable direction, and a score that would make even the toughest man weep, this movie is so much more than “emotional manipulation”. If you only gave it the once over or put off seeing it, this is your sign to marvel at the performances of Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, and Jacobi Jupe as well as Chloé Zhao’s incredible vision of the lives of young Agnes and Will. In our episode we break down the film, plus discuss Oscar “villains”, the original aura farming fashion accessory, Nathan’s pitch for an adult entertainment parody of Backrooms, and so much more.

Hamnet stars Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, Jacobi Jupe, Noah Jupe, and Joe Alwyn. Directed by Chloé Zhao.
