  • How to Survive A Heatwave in the Hood - Chapter 4: The Climate Scientists' Warning The New Normal: Hotter, Longer, More Frequent
    Mar 28 2026

Chapter 4 opens with a sobering reality: extreme heat is no longer an occasional event — it is the new normal. Heatwaves are arriving earlier, lasting longer, and growing more intense, and Black communities face this crisis with fewer resources and more vulnerabilities than anyone else.

The chapter's centerpiece is the feedback loop effect — a compounding cycle where heat generates more heat. Urban surfaces like asphalt, concrete, and dark rooftops absorb solar energy all day and release it at night, preventing communities from ever fully cooling down. Air conditioning worsens this by pushing hot air back outside, straining power grids and raising the risk of blackouts precisely when people need relief the most.

This isn't accidental. The chapter draws a direct line between redlining and environmental injustice — decades of disinvestment left Black and Brown neighborhoods with fewer trees, older housing, poor insulation, and aging infrastructure that buckles under heat stress. The Urban Heat Island effect hits hardest where historical neglect runs deepest.

The chapter then walks through regional predictions — from the Southwest's life-threatening 110°F highs, to the Southeast's deadly wet-bulb humidity, to a poorly prepared Northeast — before detailing how power grids and water systems collapse under heat pressure, and how those failures land disproportionately on Black and poor communities through longer outages, contaminated water, and spiraling costs.

The chapter closes with a clear-eyed social justice framing: the climate crisis is not color-blind. Energy poverty, environmental racism, and systemic neglect mean the people least responsible for climate change are absorbing the worst of it. The solution, the author insists, won't come from waiting on government — it will come from communities organizing and solving problems themselves.

"We are the answer we have been waiting for."

  • Returning to the Land - Restoring Black Independence in an Age of Crisis
    Mar 10 2026
We are living in an age of crisis—food insecurity, housing instability, climate extremes, and rising prices are all hitting Black communities the hardest. Yet this moment is also an opportunity: a call to return to the land, restore our independence, and rebuild what was stolen. For generations, Black families were pushed off the land through racist policies, USDA discrimination, violence, and economic pressure. We moved north chasing jobs and “opportunity,” but lost the skills and power that come from growing our own food, owning our own land, and building our own homes.Today, a new movement is rising: Black farmers, gardeners, and land stewards reclaiming acres and vacant lots, starting co-ops, planting gardens, and even pairing container homes with food-producing land to tackle BOTH food and housing crises at the same time.If you feel that pull to prepare, to protect your family, and to build real independence, I wrote two books to help you take the next steps:📗 Growing Food at Home: A Practical Guide for First-Time Gardeners – a clear, down-to-earth guide to start growing your own food, even with no experience. https://amzn.to/49U7PQE - Paperback & Kindlehttps://refugehaven.gumroad.com/l/Gro... - eBook📕 Inescapable Famine: Anarchy, Armageddon & Separation – a warning about the coming food crisis in America and its disproportionate impact on Black communities, and why we must build our own systems now.Gumroad eBook https://refugehaven.gumroad.com/l/wjdxhc Amazon Paperback and Kindle https://www.amazon.com/Inescapable-Fa...If you’re ready to return to the land—one pot, one bed, one plot at a time—these books are for you.Refuge Depot is committed to equipping the Black community with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to thrive in the face of adversity. • To Go Bag Workshop
    Sep 6 2025

    Bug out bags

There are various types of "bug out" bags, each designed for specific emergency situations. Here are four primary types:

A Get Home Bag (GHB) is intended to help you return home safely during an emergency. It typically contains essentials needed for a short journey, such as water, food, first aid supplies, and navigation tools. This bag is often kept in your vehicle or workplace, allowing for quick access when needed.

A Go Bag is similar to a Bug Out Bag but is usually more compact and intended for shorter-term emergencies. It’s designed for quick escapes from home or work when immediate evacuation is necessary. The Go Bag typically includes essentials that can support you for a few days rather than a week. Items might include lightweight food options, basic first aid supplies, a change of clothes, and important documents. The emphasis here is on portability and speed.

The Bug Out Bag is a more comprehensive kit designed for longer-term survival away from home. It includes a wider range of gear, such as shelter materials, cooking equipment, and additional food supplies, to sustain you for several days (often 72 hours or more). This bag is crucial for evacuating in the face of significant threats like natural disasters or civil unrest

The Bug Out Bag is designed for situations where you need to evacuate your home quickly and sustain yourself for an extended period, typically up to a week. This bag is larger and heavier than others, often weighing around 40 pounds (15 kg), and contains essential supplies such as food, water, first aid kits, clothing, shelter materials, tools for protection, and communication devices. The goal is to provide everything necessary to survive in the wilderness or in an emergency situation until you reach a safe location.

Similar to a Bug Out Bag, the 72-Hour Kit is specifically designed to provide essential supplies for three days. It focuses on immediate survival needs, including food, water, and medical supplies. This kit is ideal for short-term emergencies where you may need to evacuate quickly but plan to return home soon after.

A 72-Hour Kit is specifically tailored to provide enough supplies to last three days during an emergency situation. This kit focuses on immediate needs such as food, water, first aid supplies, and hygiene products. It’s ideal for natural disasters or scenarios where you may be displaced temporarily but expect to return home within a short timeframe. The contents are similar to those found in Bug Out Bags but are streamlined for brevity.

    1. Get Home Bag2. Bug Out Bag (BOB)3. 72-Hour Kit4. INCH Bag (I'm Never Coming Home)An INCH Bag is meant for extreme scenarios where you may not be able to return home for an extended period or indefinitely. This type of bag contains supplies and gear necessary for long-term survival and self-sufficiency, including advanced tools, food reserves, and protective equipment. These bags serve different purposes but share the common goal of preparing individuals for emergencies by ensuring they have the necessary resources to survive and navigate challenging situations.

  • Breaking Down Barriers: The Food Security Crisis Facing Dayton's Black Community
    Aug 28 2025

To understand today's food crisis, we need to look back at how we got here. Redlining—the discriminatory practice of denying services to residents based on their neighborhood's racial composition—didn't just affect housing. It shaped entire food landscapes. In Dayton, these historically disinvested Black neighborhoods became what activists now call "food apartheid zones"—areas systematically deprived of access to fresh, affordable, nutritious food.

The numbers tell a stark story. Approximately one in four children in the Dayton area experiences food insecurity. But behind these statistics are real families making impossible choices: pay the electric bill or buy fresh vegetables? Fill up the gas tank to get to work or drive across town to the nearest full-service grocery store?

For many Black families, the nearest sources of food are corner stores stocked with processed foods and fast-food restaurants. This reality contributes to higher rates of diet-related diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease in the Black community—health disparities that reflect not individual choices, but structural inequalities.
