Welcome to our first podcast episode ever! In our first season, we are discussing What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman, and our first episode is just chapters 1-4.

So you don't have to have the entire book read to listen to our podcast. We are reading a handful of chapters each week too, so it's spoiler free (except for the chapters we're discussing, obviously).

In this episode, we meet Izzy and Clara. Izzy is 17 and in foster care in 1995. Clara is 18 and the daughter of a wealthy banker in 1929. What She Left Behind has alternating chapters telling their stories. And we're emotional about all of it already.

Holy, 90s references, podcast listeners! In this episode, instead of discussing chapter by chapter (Izzy, Clara, Izzy, Clara), we decided to just talk about Izzy's events and then Clara's events. That way, our discussion isn't so choppy and we can really talk about our feelings!

In chapters 5-8, Izzy endures cruel bullying at the hands of Shannon and her crew, and UGH, Ethan. AND they find Clara's trunk at the asylum! Clara is pregnant and at Willard State Asylum and Dr. Roach is disgusting.

In chapters 9-12, we learn a LOT about Shannon except about how she found out about Izzy's mom (rifling through hours of microfiche??). We also get a look into how the Willard patients are (mis)treated and Clara fights back.
