  • Hope Under Surveillance: The History of Black Book Stores in America
    Sep 26 2026

KVMR News correspondent April Glaser sits down with award-winning investigative reporter Char Adams to discuss her new book, Black Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. They're joined by Cassandra Jennings, the CEO of St. HOPE, a family of nonprofits in the historically Black neighborhood of Oak Park in Sacramento, which includes Underground Books, the only Black owned bookstore in California north of the Bay Area.

Listen for a deep history of how Black-owned bookstores played a pivotal role in the culmination of the Civil Rights Movement and the subsequent surveillance they endured under COINTELPRO. Learn how Black booksellers were impacted by the recent wave of deadly police violence against Black people and the nationwide protests against it, and how that interest in supporting Black owned businesses has, or has not, sustained.
