I also discuss the distinct flavours, growth rates, and aesthetic appeal of each variety, offering tips on how to grow them successfully.

    Arugula Varieties for Microgreens:

    • Common Arugula (Eruca vesicaria):

      • Italian Arugula: Classic peppery flavour, popular in Mediterranean dishes.
      • Runway Arugula: Smooth, strap-like leaves with a mild taste.
      • Dragon's Tongue Arugula: Bold, spicy flavour with purple veins.
      • Slow Bolt Arugula: Ideal for microgreens with a spicy flavour and rapid growth.
      • Roquette (Rocket) Arugula: Robust, peppery taste, fast germination.
      • Astro Arugula: Milder flavour, smooth leaves, quick-growing.
    • Wild Arugula Varieties (Diplotaxis tenuifolia):

      • Selvatica Arugula: Intense, peppery flavour with finely lobed leaves.
      • Spicy Wild Arugula: Extra heat with deeply lobed leaves.
      • Rucola Selvatica Perennial: Bold flavour, thrives in poor soils.
    • Specialty Open-Pollinated Varieties:

      • Red Dragon Arugula: Red-tinted leaves, milder flavour.
      • Wasabi Rocket: Slightly milder than Wasabi Arugula but with a similar heat intensity.

  • Sow What? Saving Seeds For Microgreens (Part One)
    Dec 27 2024

In this episode, I explore saving vegetable seeds to use for microgreens. I've been thinking about this lately, as microgreens are such a fast way to grow fresh, nutritious food. With the cost of everything skyrocketing and supply chains becoming increasingly unstable, having our own microgreen production might be crucial in the times to come. Plus, it adds to our food security!

This looks like it will be a three- or four-part series as I discover all the varieties you can grow for microgreens.

See you in the garden, planting your microgreen seeds!
