  • The Awareness Gap

Most workplaces don’t have a “culture” problem. They have an awareness problem, and it shows up everywhere: leaders who stay disconnected, teams that don’t feel safe telling the truth, and employees who learn to keep their struggle quiet because honesty feels risky. I’m Mark, and in Fierce Encouragement I’m naming the gap I’ve seen across hundreds of conversations with leaders, coaches, and teams: we say we want psychological safety, but we punish it the other 51 weeks of the year.

We get into why culture decks, mission statements, and once-a-year team-building events often miss the real dysfunction and misalignment. I also unpack how performance reviews can quietly turn into shame and blame when leaders avoid their own inner state, and how that avoidance spreads through the whole team. Trust doesn’t come from a poster. Trust grows when we build self-awareness first, then practice honest communication from a grounded place.

To make this practical, I share a simple nervous system reset I call “the pause that matters.” When you’re drowning in tickets, getting pushed on delivery, or heading into a crucial conversation, pausing with a slow belly breath and an even slower exhale can pull you out of fight, flight, or freeze and back into clear thinking. If you’re tired of pretending the culture talk is working, listen through to the end, try the pause today, and let me know what you notice. Subscribe, share this with a leader who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find Fierce Encouragement.

  • What If Slowing Down Gave You Time Back

“I don’t have time” can sound like a simple calendar problem, but I’ve been hearing it as something else: a warning light for overwhelm, avoidance, and a nervous system stuck in go mode. In this quick, punchy Fierce Encouragement message, I break down why busyness is usually a symptom, not the true obstacle and why “more effort” often isn’t the answer when your mind is running on autopilot.

We dig into a leadership coaching lens that’s both practical and honest. When we miss goals or feel behind, it’s easy to turn it into personal shame or blame the team. I argue it’s more often a systems problem, a design problem, and a self-leadership problem. That means asking better questions: Where am I creating chaos? What am I outrunning? What am I avoiding by staying busy? And how do “lesser goals” become a clear, comfortable path that keeps me from the work that actually matters?

Then I teach a simple breathwork practice you can use immediately: the three-breath pause. It takes less than a minute: calm the body, notice what mask you’re wearing, and lead from awareness with a warm, confident presence. I also share how this connects to my Awareness Lab, built to help you practice presence without adding another complicated framework to your day. If this lands with you, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s overloaded, and leave a review so more people can find it. What moment today will you use the three-breath pause?

  • What If Productivity Is Not The Point
    Sep 23 2026

Your life can look stable and successful while your inner world feels like a mess. I open with a vivid memory from my early days in Chicago: driving to a new job with my heart racing, convinced someone would stand up in a training session and expose me as unqualified. That “pit in the stomach” feeling has a name for many of us, imposter syndrome, and it often travels with self-doubt, fear, hesitation, and the kind of procrastination that quietly steals your energy.

From there, I fast-forward to the stage where things look even better from the outside: a good job, a young family, more responsibility, more people counting on me. And yet the anxiety is still there, most days. Projects start with great intentions and then fade out. My attention jumps every 10 or 20 minutes. I talk about the painful split between outward performance and inward struggle, and how our culture, workplaces, and even leadership spaces can lack the language and safety to simply say, “I’m struggling,” without consequences.

The turning point is not more theory or another certification, helpful as those can be. The turning point is awareness. I share how practicing quietude with a small group helped me notice what was happening in my body and mind without instantly trying to fix it. Then I offer a tool you can use right away: the awareness audit. Take a few conscious breaths, count each breath, and gently observe when your mind slips into planning, remembering, or judging. That moment of noticing is the training.

If you want to go deeper, I also share my new eight-week Awareness Lab and why small-group coaching and practice can change your life fast. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review. What did you notice when you tried the awareness audit?

  • Have Fun And Get A Spotter
    Sep 4 2026

The fastest way to stall your progress is to believe the answer is always more effort. When you’re a driven, plugged-in high achiever, “more reps” can feel like the only path forward, but it can also quietly train anxiety, burnout, and harsh self-talk. I share a different approach that comes straight from the gym and lands hard in real life: sometimes you get stronger by doing less volume and more intention.

I break down the idea of “heavy singles” and “walkouts” from strength training, where we overload the system in small, controlled doses so the nervous system learns, adapts, and recovers. Then we translate that into practical personal development: the small apology that feels heavy, the one email you keep avoiding, the moment you put your phone away and truly listen, or the brave step toward a project you’ve been resisting. These are tiny actions with big emotional weight, and they’re often the most effective confidence builders.

We also get into creator fear, the strange truth that a blank page can feel scarier than a barbell, and why growth mindset matters when you’re trying to create, lead, or change your life. You’ll hear a simple breathing-based mindset shift, two questions that cut through spiraling thoughts, and a reminder worth repeating when it’s time to “test”: have fun and get a spotter.

If this helps, subscribe to Fierce Encouragement, share it with a friend who’s grinding too hard, and leave a review so more people can find the tools. What’s your heavy single this week?

  • The Job Changed. Did You?
    Aug 31 2026

You can be great at your job and still feel like you’re bracing for impact. When you’ve spent years getting rewarded for staying calm in chaos, it’s easy to keep leading like the building is on fire, even after you’ve earned the promotion, the title, and the bigger life. That’s the tension we unpack here: high performance on the outside, survival mode on the inside, and the quiet stress that shows up when you finally have space to think.

I share a real coffee conversation with a successful sales leader who’s a year into a new role and realizing the old playbook doesn’t fit. His past work trained him to react fast, absorb pressure, and manage people through upset customer moments. The new job asks for something else: motivation without adrenaline, vision over reactivity, and the patience to build. We dig into the mindset shift from defense mode to offense mode and why “holding it together” can become the very thing that holds you back.

We also get practical. If you want better work life balance, more presence at home, and a calmer nervous system, it starts with getting quiet long enough to ask what you really want. I offer a simple tool you can use anywhere: the one-minute pause with box breathing to settle stress and reset your state. If this resonates, subscribe to Fierce Encouragement, share it with a friend who’s carrying too much, and leave a review so more leaders can find a healthier way to lead.

  • Self-Awareness Is Just The Door
    Aug 27 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Self-awareness gets pitched like a shiny finish line, but I’ve learned it’s more like the front door. When we finally notice what we’re thinking and feeling, it’s often because we feel disconnected: from our body, our relationships, our work, or the person we know we’re meant to be. That moment of noticing can feel raw, almost like an open wound, because it forces us to face patterns we’d rather avoid, including the harsh self-talk that keeps so many of us stuck.

From there, I go a layer deeper than “just be aware.” The real invitation under awareness is acceptance, presence, and a steady sense of worthiness. I talk about amor fati, loving your fate, not as a cute quote but as a practical mindset that helps you stop living in resignation. I also share a personal story about being laid off in my late 40s and how quickly fear, anger, and betrayal can turn into a loop of self-attack, numbing out, and repeating the same emotional patterns day after day.

To make it concrete, I lay out three things that helped me rebuild: a tribe of ride-or-die friends, embodied practice (lifting, walking, meditation, and study), and self-image work that accepts flaws without shame. Then I offer a simple tool for emotional regulation and nervous system training: find the most painful point in your day, set a one- or two-minute timer, feel the emotion in your body, and watch it like a wise observer before choosing your reaction. I also share a takeaway from Daniel Goleman and Tsoknyi Rinpoche’s Why We Meditate about conditioned patterns and the deeper worthiness underneath them.

If you want a practical way to build mindfulness, resilience, and healthier self-talk, listen now, try the timer practice this week, and then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review with what changed for you.

  • Stop Saying You Do Not Have Time
    Aug 22 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

You keep showing up. You carry the weight. You hold it together. And somehow the sentence “I don’t have time” keeps coming out of your mouth even when you’re doing everything you can. I want to challenge that reflex and offer something more honest, more freeing, and more useful for leaders, builders, parents, and helpers who feel stretched thin.

We dig into why time scarcity can be less about the clock and more about a scarcity mindset that hits your body first: panic, tension, urgency, and the need to push things away. That quick “I’ll deal with it later” can feel productive, but it leaves open loops that quietly drain your attention and wear down your cognitive capacity. If you deal with overthinking, idea overload, or ADHD tendencies, you’ll recognize how exhausting those unanswered threads can become.

Then we flip the math. What if five minutes right now buys you a high focus hour later? Instead of performing busyness, we talk about small, deliberate investments that pay dividends: planning, checking in, and sharpening the saw so you stop grinding through your day on raw effort alone.

Finally, we land on one real tool you can use today: your breath. I share why “breath is a doorway” is not just a nice phrase, and how a slightly longer exhale can help tune your nervous system before something hectic. Try the one-breath or three-breath practice before your next meeting, then let me know what you notice. If this helped, subscribe, share it with someone who’s carrying a lot, and leave a review so more people can find Fierce Encouragement.

  • Tune The Instrument
    Aug 20 2026

You can be crushing it in meetings, saying the right things, and still feel that low static under the surface. That’s the moment we’re talking about today the tight chest, the shallow breath, the jaw that won’t unclench, the buzz behind the eyes that you’ve started calling “normal.” I made Fierce Encouragement for the people who carry a lot: leaders, parents, builders, and the ones everyone counts on. If you’ve been running on an empty tank while looking totally fine, you’re not alone.

We dig into a core idea I call “tuning the instrument” because you are the instrument you play every day, and most of us were never taught how to tune ourselves before we perform. We explore why pushing harder and thinking harder often fails, and why the thing you’re most proud of like discipline, grit, or high performance can sometimes become the very thing that keeps you disconnected. We also talk about how self-estrangement can masquerade as strength, and why real clarity often starts in the body with physical self-awareness, not another productivity plan.

You’ll leave with one small, real tool you can try tonight: move your phone out of your bedroom for a night, a week, or even longer and notice what shifts in your sleep, your mornings, and your baseline stress. If you want extra credit, I share a simple sleep mask tweak that has helped me more than almost anything. If this helps, subscribe, share it with someone who carries a lot, and leave a review so more people can find the encouragement.
