    The CMRCA

In this episode I meet with great friend and great physical therapist, Kevin Cowell.

Dr. Kevin Cowell, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS (He/Him) is the Founder of The Climb Clinic and recognized worldwide in climbing rehabilitation and performance. With over a decade of climbing-specific rehab experience, he has built a reputation nationally and internationally for helping climbers return stronger, move better, and perform at the highest levels of the sport.

Dr. Cowell is one of the Arc’teryx Climbing PTs and serves as a USA Paraclimbing Team Physical Therapist, working with elite adaptive athletes competing on the national and world stage. He has supported athletes at national and international competitions through the IFSC and USA Climbing (USAC). As a high-level climber himself (up to 5.14), he bridges the gap between rehabilitation and elite performance with firsthand understanding of the physical and mental demands of climbing.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Applied Health from Azusa Pacific University and his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Regis University. Dr. Cowell completed post-doctoral training and is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT). He also holds a Diploma in Osteopractic, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and maintains advanced certifications in dry needling (Cert. DN), spinal manipulation (Cert. SMT), extremity manipulation (Cert. EMT), and ultrasound-guided techniques.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Cowell travels nationally to teach and assist in advanced continuing education courses focused on dry needling, manipulation, and performance rehabilitation, helping shape the next generation of clinicians treating climbers and high-performance athletes.

When he’s not working with athletes, you’ll find him climbing, backcountry skiing, or mountain biking in the Colorado mountains.

  • How to Test Finger Strength (and what you should do with the results!)
    Jan 11 2026

In this video, we will use the Tindeq Progressor to measure finger strength in unique ways: "curling" and "Pulling."

The "Curling" method will give us our "true" finger strength numbers as it most accurately reflects the muscles of the fingers in isolation.

The "Pulling" method will reflect the fingers' total ability to resist. The force numbers and levels will be greater because the force numbers are coming from the muscles and surrounding structures of the fingers.

Both are important! But both are uniquely tested and trained! After this video, you will better understand how to target and improve both qualities of the fingers!
