The Refrigerator Standoff

Have you ever opened the refrigerator, stared inside for thirty seconds, closed it—and then opened it again five minutes later? Apparently, we're expecting new food to arrive between visits. You stand there staring at exactly the same cheese, leftovers, vegetables, and bottle of salad dressing you rejected five minutes ago.nothing changed. Yet somehow, we look again. Maybe we're not hungry. Maybe we're just hoping the refrigerator will surprise us. Speaking of surprises, here's something unusual about coffee: coffee flowers are white and often compared in fragrance to jasmine. Before there are coffee cherries to harvest, the coffee plant produces delicate blossoms. Most of us only see coffee after it has been harvested, processed, roasted, ground, and brewed. We don't often think about the beautiful flowering stage that came long before our morning cup. Isn't that a wonderful reminder about life? We often celebrate the finished product while forgetting everything that happened before it—the growing, waiting, changing and developing. We're like that too. Some seasons of our lives don't look very productive from the outside, but something may still be growing. So don't measure your progress only by what you can see today. And while you're waiting for whatever comes next, enjoy the little things already in front of you—a comfortable chair, a conversation with somebody you love, a peaceful morning, and maybe a good cup of coffee. The Fitted Sheet Showdown

Have you ever tried folding a fitted sheet? You start out confidently. “This can't be that difficult.” Five minutes later you're standing in the bedroom holding something that looks less like folded laundry and more like a parachute that survived a tornado. You tuck one corner into another. Another corner disappears. You turn it around. Now you're not even sure which side is the sheet and which side is you. Finally, you roll the whole thing into a ball and put it in the closet. There. Folded. Sometimes good enough really IS good enough. And coffee has an interesting connection to fabric too. Scientists and manufacturers have experimented with incorporating spent coffee grounds into textiles and fibers, looking for ways to give material that would normally be discarded another useful purpose. Think about that. Yesterday's coffee grounds could potentially become part of tomorrow's fabric instead of simply becoming waste. I like that thought because life has a way of teaching us that “used” doesn't necessarily mean “useless.” Experiences we thought were wasted can teach us something. Mistakes can make us wiser. Difficult seasons can make us more compassionate toward somebody else going through the same thing. And sometimes that messy fitted sheet teaches us that perfection is highly overrated! So give yourself some grace today. Everything doesn't have to be perfectly folded, perfectly planned, or perfectly accomplished. The Checkout Line Decision!

Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break,

Have you ever stood in a checkout line and convinced yourself the other line was moving faster? So you switch. Immediately, the line you just left starts flying. The person who was ten people behind you is now practically loading groceries into their car, while you're standing behind somebody who has apparently decided this is the perfect time to question the price of every item in their cart. You switch back—and now THAT line stops. At some point you realize the problem may not be the line. Maybe the universe is just having a little fun with you today! Life is funny that way. We can spend so much time trying to get somewhere faster that we forget we're going to get there eventually.

Coffee has its own lesson about patience. Here's something interesting: after coffee is harvested, some producers use a method called honey processing. Despite the name, no honey is added. Part of the sticky fruit material surrounding the coffee seed is intentionally left on while it dries. Different amounts can remain depending on the processing style, and that can influence the character of the finished coffee. So “honey” coffee doesn't mean somebody took a jar of honey out to the coffee field! Sometimes names don't tell the whole story—and neither do first impressions. Maybe that person holding up our checkout line is having a difficult day. Maybe the cashier is new. Maybe the delay we find irritating is giving us an opportunity to practice a little patience. And perhaps that's a good thought to carry into the rest of the day. So when life puts you in the slow line, don't let it steal your joy. Take your time, smile at somebody, and when you finally get home, pour yourself a well-earned cup of coffee.
