The Checkout Line Decision!

Have you ever stood in a checkout line and convinced yourself the other line was moving faster? So you switch. Immediately, the line you just left starts flying. The person who was ten people behind you is now practically loading groceries into their car, while you're standing behind somebody who has apparently decided this is the perfect time to question the price of every item in their cart. You switch back—and now THAT line stops. At some point you realize the problem may not be the line. Maybe the universe is just having a little fun with you today! Life is funny that way. We can spend so much time trying to get somewhere faster that we forget we're going to get there eventually.

Coffee has its own lesson about patience. Here's something interesting: after coffee is harvested, some producers use a method called honey processing. Despite the name, no honey is added. Part of the sticky fruit material surrounding the coffee seed is intentionally left on while it dries. Different amounts can remain depending on the processing style, and that can influence the character of the finished coffee. So “honey” coffee doesn't mean somebody took a jar of honey out to the coffee field! Sometimes names don't tell the whole story—and neither do first impressions. Maybe that person holding up our checkout line is having a difficult day. Maybe the cashier is new. Maybe the delay we find irritating is giving us an opportunity to practice a little patience. And perhaps that's a good thought to carry into the rest of the day. So when life puts you in the slow line, don't let it steal your joy. Take your time, smile at somebody, and when you finally get home, pour yourself a well-earned cup of coffee.
