    Avis de l'équipe

Curtis Sittenfeld's characters are successful, settled, suburban, and yet, their pasts continue to haunt them. The mean girl from high school, the unlikely hookup, and the persistently present friend from college all threaten to disrupt carefully crafted lives. Tensions rise through inner monologues; outlets for relief come at a premium; change becomes an ever-moving target. Set in post-2016 election America, the stories told in You Think It, I’ll Say It are told through a semi-nihilistic lens and grapple with the question: What is the true price of contentment?

The stories included in You Think It, I'll Say It appear as follows:
    1. "Gender Studies", narrated by Emily Rankin
    2. "The World Has Many Butterflies", narrated by Emily Rankin
    3. "Vox Clamantis in Deserto", narrated by Emily Rankin
    4. "Bad Latch", narrated by Emily Rankin
    5. "Plausible Deniability", narrated by Mark Deakins
    6. "A Regular Couple", narrated by Emily Rankin
    7. "Off the Record", narrated by Emily Rankin
    8. "The Prairie Wife", narrated by Emily Rankin
    9. "Volunteers Are Shining Stars", narrated by Emily Rankin
    10. "Do-Over", narrated by Mark Deakins

    Description

“Every bit as smart, sensitive, funny, and genuine as her phenomenally popular novels,”* a dazzling collection from The New York Times best-selling author of Prep, American Wife, and Eligible.

“I really loved all the characters in this book. They’re so complex and interesting, and in every story, you’ll find them going through these pivotal moments in their lives.” [Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine Book Pick)]

Named one of the 10 best books of the year by People and USA Today and one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post • NPR • Financial TimesSan Francisco Chronicle • New York Public Library • Refinery29

A suburban mother of two fantasizes about the downfall of an old friend whose wholesome lifestyle empire may or may not be built on a lie. A high-powered lawyer honeymooning with her husband is caught off guard by the appearance of the girl who tormented her in high school. A shy Ivy League student learns the truth about a classmate’s seemingly enviable life.

Curtis Sittenfeld has established a reputation as a sharp chronicler of the modern age who humanizes her subjects even as she skewers them. Now, with this first collection of short fiction, her “astonishing gift for creating characters that take up residence in readers’ heads” (The Washington Post) is showcased like never before.

Throughout the 10 stories in You Think It, I’ll Say It, Sittenfeld upends assumptions about class, relationships, and gender roles in a nation that feels both adrift and viscerally divided. With moving insight and uncanny precision, Curtis Sittenfeld pinpoints the questionable decisions, missed connections, and sometimes extraordinary coincidences that make up a life. Indeed, she writes what we’re all thinking - if only we could express it with the wit of a master satirist, the storytelling gifts of an old-fashioned raconteur, and the vision of an American original.

    couldn't finish

I kept waiting for a story that wasnt all about self absorption. After listening to several, I gave up. If you like stories about shallow, self - absorbed protagonists , you might enjoy this book. I'm returning it to Audible.

    I do not recommend this...

I found all of the short stories that I could muster listening to so vapid and awful. Hated it.

    Loved it!

I Love the idea of short stories because they keep my interest whereas a longer story sometimes can drag; however the downside to short stories is often that the authors just don’t seem to know how or when to successfully end them. I think this must be a challenge to writing short stories but I found this collection to be extraordinary in it’s ability to offer highly entertaining stories that ended in a way that made sense.

Stories of people thinking and acting horribly towards each other

If that’s your thing, definitely read this book. If not, skip it. I couldn’t get through it fast enough and when there was two stories left I came to my senses and stopped listening. Personally, I would rather listen to stories of people, especially women, being kind and supportive towards one another.

    Unlikable characters

I found myself grumpy while listening to this book, as though I was spending time with those draining, unpleasant people we all have in our lives and avoid as much as possible. I struggled to find redeeming aspects of them all and usually came up very short.

    Hated it

I'm no ingenue but really disliked this collection of stories. Depraved, narcissistic, neurotic tales of the worst in us. Observant but to what end?

Sittenfeld at her best, the narration not my favor

The stories are as good as short fiction gets but I actually enjoyed her narration of two of these stories at the New Yorker Fiction podcast much more than the versions here. Regardless, it is a great book.

    Enjoyable!

The stories are very well written and performed. Some of the stories have political undertones I didn't enjoy but I appreciated the context nonetheless. Emily Rankin's performance is perfect!

    I want more!

I didn’t want this book to end. The stories were complex and the characters were developed very well. The stories felt so real. No fluff and stuff here. The narrators were both fantastic. More, please!

    Entertaining, but...

A quick, entertaining listen. The second to last story is full of racial stereotypes though.
