A widower with a son who has gone wandering, Izzy Croat is trying to mend a life that feels aimless and tinged with loss. A mainstay in Widow's Point, he finds himself in the position of taking a job running the Retention Room at his old high school, a place where he had been Teacher of the Year, Union President, and the go-to guy for any problems that arose in school life. But now he plays regular gigs at the local watering holes with his buddy Lou for spending money, looks after one of the town's characters, Deke, leaving him meals and cleaning his home, and tries his best to stay connected to the love of his life, Evie. But returning to high school has its price: The school is in turmoil over an impending strike, and Izzy finds himself in the same position he had been in years ago, having to choose between his sense of duty and obligation to his former profession and colleagues, or embracing his life in the present and moving towards happiness.
