    Description

From the New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of The Vixen and the Vet comes an unforgettable story about loss, redemption, and the healing power of love.

My name is Cassidy Porter.... My father, Paul Isaac Porter, was convicted 20 years ago for the brutal murder of a dozen innocent girls.

Though I was only eight years old at the time, I am aware-every day of my life-that I am his child, his only son. To protect the world from the poison in my veins, I live a quiet life, off the grid, away from humanity.

I promised myself, and my mother, not to infect innocent lives with the darkness that swirls within me, waiting to make itself known. It's a promise I would have kept...if Brynn Cadogan hadn't stumbled into my life.

Now I exist between heaven and hell: falling for a woman who wants to love me, while all along reminding myself that I must remain...Unloved.

    Contains mature themes.

A SWEET AND SPECIAL LOVE STORY

Brynn and Cassidy’s touching love story was all I hoped it would be.. a totally entertaining five star listen. It’s got a sad start which turns sinister.. but from then on it’s sweet, thought provoking, tender and beautiful. Brynn had been grieving a lost love for two years and was finally about to move on and gentle humble hermit Cassidy was a prisoner of circumstances and had retreated to a self-imposed wilderness prison. They found each other and slowly healed one another.. but Cassidy had a painful secret - one that shaped his entire life, restricted a relationship and enforced an end date.

Worth a credit? Yes, a sweet and special story, with selfless lonely characters, some sex and great dual POV narration.

    Unbelievably beautiful!

If you are looking for a book that has everything, this book is the listen you should get. Katy Regnery will captivate you from the first page of the book and keep you there for the entire story. A novel with despair, love, danger, suspense and hope, you will be entranced from the start. Brynn is our heroine, dealing for two years with the tragic, sudden death of her fiance is taking steps to put her life in order. She travels to the one place she knows that Jem felt connected, Mount Katahdin in Maine. With closure in mind, she climbs the mountain, but danger is lurking. Cassidy Porter, a man living off the grid sees this beautiful woman and with his instincts is there to protect her. From this point on, we get to see how the crazy circumstances that has the paths of these two meet grow. The heart wrenching back story of Cassidy is horrific. This poor man is full of innocence and purity, and it is impossible not to want to help heal him. From a very young age, he has been told that he is secrets are too dark to admit to anyone, and as he falls for Brynn, he holds himself back from her. Brynn finally finds the medicine to heal her heart only to have Cass just out of arm's reach. With suspense and twists of fate, Regnery has masterfully woven this web of a story to create an romance that has every feel imaginable, from sadness to love, despair to hope. She continues to me a one click listen for me but I have to say this is my favorite of her books with incredible imagery and passion.

The choice of narration is key for storytelling, and this team for this book is beyond compare. Maxine Mitchell and Joe Arden perform this story with impeccable accents and emotions that will tear you apart and build you back up. A better duo could not have been chosen for this story.

    Religious undertones

Overall an entertaining read. The strong accents were a bit hard to get used to, but they were well done in dual narration. The main characters were believable and their backgrounds drew me emotionally into the story. The primary issue I had was with the vaguely religious undertones combined with an odd genetic angle. Like, I can understand how Cass has a mental hangup about being the son of a serial killer, but the whole tainted blood angle that everyone seemed to believe and was reinforced by the plot is just ridiculous. No, sharing genes with a serial killer does not make someone a serial killer in waiting. Without giving anything away about the story, I was disappointed about how the author resolved the storyline on multiple levels. If it weren't for the last 2 hours of the book I'd have probably given the story 4 stars.

    Guhhh... beautiful!

This is the book that grips you so hard, you have no choice but to listen straight through. I hung on every word and felt every emotion.

Told in first person through alternating chapters in the eyes of both main characters, Cass and Brynn, it was the most magic combination of the perfect author and narration. Katy Regnery painted a very vivid wilderness world while Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell’s voices were able to bring the characters to life so vividly.

    5 stars all around.

    3 Stars

Intriguing and creative plot, but the coincidental wrap-up was too much for me. There have been too many books in the last 5 years that try to have these type of shocking or crazy coincidences that unless they are completely believable or realistic, they just don't work for me. They seem as if they are trying too hard and end up looking unoriginal. This is the 4th book by Regnery that I have read and I'm coming to the conclusion that I might not care for her writing style. I was completely optimistic while reading the first half of this story and began to think that this might be the book that makes me a Regnery reader. Unfortunately, from the point that the two main characters meet, the plausibility and enjoyment took a nosedive. I can easily suspend reality and enjoy moments of implausibility, but there were just too many of those moments in this book. Great beginning and certain moments throughout, but the middle bulk of the story and contrived coincidences are what brought my rating down. Disclaimer: My review is wholly subjective to my personal reading quirks.

    3 1/2 ☆☆☆

Heartbreaking in many ways. I did not care for the heroine in the middle of the story. She was too pushy with the hero even after he made his feelings clear. It came off as selfish especially considering that she wanted him to change his feelings in the span of a few weeks. Twist at the end that was a bit too coincidental but overall I enjoyed the story.

Narration was great. This may be my favorite Joe Arden narration so far.

Such a beautiful story with fantastic narration

This book was beyond amazing. I never listen to audiobooks this fast but I just couldn’t pause this book. This was such a beautiful love story that had quite a bit of heartache as well. Cassidy and Brynne were both dealing with their own struggles.

Brynne is still struggling to move on with life after losing her fiancée 2 years ago. She basically just quit living life and was just going through the motions of daily life. As she is going through her small box of her fiancée’s things, she finds his cell phone and decides to charge it up. She sees his last message to her and this sends her to his favorite place in Maine.

Cassidy has lived his life completely alone because of the sins of his father. His mother and grandfather were terrified he was going to become just like his dad and they told Cassidy he needed to make sure he didn’t get too close to anyone ever so that the temptation wouldn’t arise. At this point Cassidy has been alone for 10 years, except for the quick trips to town to get necessities.

While Brynne is hiking the trail in Maine, she comes across a man that makes her spine crawl. And with good reason, he attacks her and she almost dies. Luckily for Brynne, Cassidy was close by. He saw her hiking and something immediately spoke to his soul about her. He saves her and nurses her back to health.

This is the beginning of such a beautiful love story but also tragic as Cassidy does his best to keep Brynne at arms length but she doesn’t take to that so easily. These two were such a perfect match in an imperfect situation. Brynne shows Cassidy what true love feels and looks like. He also learns how to give love as well.

The twist totally shocked me. It was so intriguing to see all these truths come to light.

The narration couldn’t have been better. I love Maxine’s voice, she truly fantastic. Joe stole the show in my mind as his accent was absolutely amazing. I’ve been to Maine a few times and he sounded just like my family and people there.

This one will stay with me for a long time

I did a search for Joe Arden and this one was near the top. Joe and Maxine did a great job with this one and I loved the story and the characters. I love any story they do together. They are a power couple in narration.

This one had me wondering what was going to happen from start to finish and the twists and turns just made this story so much better than I had hoped. I true nail biter too.
