    Description

"Incredible and searing." (Nic Stone, number-one New York Times best-selling author of Dear Martin)

The Hate U Give meets Just Mercy in this unflinching yet uplifting first novel that explores the racist injustices in the American justice system.

Every week, 17-year-old Tracy Beaumont writes letters to Innocence X, asking the organization to help her father, an innocent Black man on death row. After seven years, Tracy is running out of time - her dad has only 267 days left. Then the unthinkable happens. The police arrive in the night, and Tracy's older brother, Jamal, goes from being a bright, promising track star to a "thug" on the run, accused of killing a white girl. Determined to save her brother, Tracy investigates what really happened between Jamal and Angela down at the Pike. But will Tracy and her family survive the uncovering of the skeletons of their Texas town's racist history that still haunt the present?

Fans of Nic Stone, Tiffany D. Jackson, and Jason Reynolds won't want to miss this provocative and gripping debut.

    Wow!

I am not your typical book lover-- I'm the guy that prefers watching the movie instead. This book sucked me in and with each chapter, I couldn't help but read more and more! I am VERY impressed with this book. It had a good flow, it was suspenseful, engaging, educational and riveting. I HIGHLY recommend this book! You won't regret it!

    This is my America

This book was so engaging that I used it as part of a college class I teach as an adjunct to Caste by Isabel Wilkerson.
The combination of that instructive text with this YA narrative rounded out the powerful lessons I hope my students are learning about race and class and caste in America.
The story is powerful and very appealing - so well written that many of my students and myself could not put it down. I highly recommend This is my America.

This book should be read by all you g people and used in schools!

I absolutely loved this book! It is so rich with a lot of themes and history on the existence of systemic racism that has ran rapid through this country for years and continues to exist even today! I recommend that young people read this book and that families engage in this book together because it brings real issues to life that we need to make young black people more aware of! Hats off to this author! Job well done!

    Impeccable Narration

Bahni made reading this book an amazing experience! She portrayed the main character in a way that it sounds as if Tracy is speaking to you! A memorable experience and an even amazing book for YA!

    Good read, but needed more

    Warning, this review contains spoilers.

Bahni Turpin is one of my favorite audiobook narrators and once again, she delivers!

Unfortunately, this is all too real and stories like this always leave me wondering just how many innocent people (black men specifically) are incarcerated, on death row or have been executed, only for them to be innocent.

As good as the story was, though, I could see a lot of how it was most likely going to play out within the first few chapters. I understand the need to showcase different characters and what not, but it gave away too much too soon.

Also, the ending seemed a little rushed. How exactly did Tracy end up with about 100,000 social media followers? What did she do to gain that kind of social media presence? I know it says she started a podcast or was planning to, but what else?

Also, did Jamall go to college like he had planned? What did James end up doing? What about Beverly? And even though they aren’t the focus of the story, I wanted to know what happened to the sheriff? His brother? His son and his friends? Dean’s mom? The prosecuting attorneys in Jameses first trial? What about the murder of the Vietnamese man? Was that case re-opened?

To anyone who for whatever reason seems to think a death sentence should be carried out immediately after the sentence is handed down, read this story and the countless others like it, fiction and nonfiction alike, and tell me why.

    A MUST READ for everyone!!

    Where do I begin—Awesome?

As I read This Is My America, I fell deep into a story that is very close to my heart. Close to my mission—to uplift Black voices and continue to strive to uncover the unfair and Injustice of Black men.

Kim Johnson gives an unapologetic glimpse into the lives of what America really looks like to Black men—to their families they leave behind.

I loved the plot, descriptive setting, sensory details throughout, and the realistic dialogue between realistic characters.

The author did a wonderful. No FANTASTIC job in pulling me in as a reader as if I was watching a movie—or in most Black homes, watching the 7:00 local news. I can’t say enough of the emotions I felt inside, but what I can say is this... Stories like this needs to be told. We have to change the narrative and continue to stand in solidarity to end Injustice for all.

Love to see this as a film

This story and characters were so relevant to what is going on today. This is great book for teens and should be use in class for political science.

This is my American is my favorite book now!!!!

I loved this book because it had a great story line, and it showed what it would be like it if someone you loved was in jail for something he/she didn’t do. The narrator Bahni Turpin was amazing!! The way she read it was spectacular. You could really see the emotion in the story and what the characters look like. Over all this book is amazing and I 100% recommend it!!
