    Description

Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic meets the Salem witch trials in this haunting story about three sisters on a quest for revenge - and how love may be the only thing powerful enough to stop them.

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow...where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles, and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.

Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

Like many locals, 17-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters' return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives, unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo or save herself.

    Don't waste your credit.

I try to set one rule for myself when reading a book. If you don't like it after two chapters, don't read another word. That being said, this book was purchased with my monthly Audible credit which equates to sixteen dollars and some change each month. Needless to say, I felt obligated to push through to the end. A waste of my time and my credit. The idea for this book was good, it's the execution that didn't work. The were a lot of holes in the plot and it didn't exactly hold my attention. Part of the reason for this was that the characters were just very cookie-cutter, one-dimensional characters. The dialogue fell flat and it was all too easy to guess what each character was going to do or say next. The only thing I really liked about the book was the setting. The narrator also did a good job. Her voice was fitting for the theme of the story. Overall, don't waste your money. Rent it from the library if you really want to read it.

    PERFECT WITCH BOOK

I loved this book!!! Omg. For starters, I listened to the audiobook. I absolutely HATED the narrator. The production was muffled and her voice was kind of grating. She didn’t do any voices and just read the novel through with no feeling whatsoever. Now for the positives: this book gave me Hocus Pocus Realness. Three witchy sisters come back and drown three men/boys (each) to wreak revengeful havoc on the town that killed them two centuries ago. I expected so much from this book and I feel like it really gave me everything I was looking Magic, treachery, Deceit, mayhem, and romance. What I wasn’t expecting was the ending—holy smokes!!! It literally came up behind me and slapped me in the butt and pulled my hair. My jaw DROPPED!! I think this author’s writing is superb. She has a phenomenal and concrete way of describing things and feelings instead of just using fancy metaphors that make me focus less on the actual story being told. I think the author must have had the ending pictured out before beginning the book because her story was executed so well. I will ALWAYS recommend this book to those who love witchcraft and stories about magic.

    The Wicked Deep

I really enjoyed this book and it constantly had be guessing. I loved how the chapters would finish with a small bit of info into the past just to give you a bit more of story, bit by bit. I had so many questions during this book and it all came together into the end. Kept me listening. Kept me wanting more information. Loved it!!!

    Highly Problematic

Look, the world-building is great, very atmospheric. The story was a good idea, but poorly executed. It was also a bit predictable, as well. The plot summary is misleading, let's be clear: This is not about witches. The narrator was fine, probably the best part of this audiobook experience. I had some very serious problems with this book, though. I'm not sure how to say them without giving away the book. If you're thinking about giving this a try, be weary.

    I tried...

I decided to give this book a shot, despite some of the negative reviews and I had a hard time with it. The story itself is very interesting but I could not get past the narrator. Her voice was so flat and kept putting me to sleep.

Young Teen book without a story or plot

What disappointed you about The Wicked Deep?

In my family's opinion the author ONLY focused on appealing to Young Teen girls with over the top descriptions of every last single emotion the characters felt and lots of manufactured drama. This emotional over explanation felt like filler instead of tools to help develop the plot. The over the top teen drama made it impossible to finish. My family, including two teen girls, started this book on a recent road trip stopped listening after 3 hours. I quote "Finally" was the teens' response when I switched to the radio. They went on to ask "where was that story going to go and why was she, the main character, so dumb." I think the issue was in character development, if you are going to use supernatural powers you have to explain their limits early to the reader. Instead we know exactly how she felt about every last darn thing she encountered.

Would you ever listen to anything by Shea Ernshaw again?

    No.

What does Casey Turner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Too much teen drama.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    I couldn't find a redeeming quality if I tried.

    Atmospheric and lovely!

This is the perfect, witchy fall read! I do agree that the ending felt rather rushed, but other than that, lovely narrator and very engaging story. Definitely would recommend!!

Too much romance, too little ghosts

I loved the setting and premise of this book. The author did an excellent job creating an eerie, gothic world and I loved the history of the sisters. Parts of the story were very interesting and I just wish there had been more plot development and detail. It could have been great. Unfortunately the relationship between the main character and her love interest was the focal point of the story. I'm not sure why we needed so many romantic moments. It got very tedious after a while. I found myself regularly rolling my eyes at the description of how smitten she was by his eyes, hair, body... nothing whatsoever about his character or personality. He seemed to exist solely to brush his hair out of his eyes or gaze thoughtfully into the sea. If you want a book that is more focused on teenage romance than ghosts, you will probably really like this story.
