Description

For generations, the descendants of the powerful telepath known as the Rowan have used their various talents to help mankind - some are telepaths, others can teleport through space, others are empathic healers. The clan has grown powerful. They have led Earth to ally itself with the alien Mrdini, and together the two races have held back the predatory Hivers, a deadly insectoid species that kills all life it finds.

Like all powerful families, the Rowan clan has also made enemies. There are those who say the treaties with the Mrdini gave away too much - especially, that the Mrdini get more than their fair share of new living space as habitable planets are discovered - that the Hivers should have been exterminated by now, and that far too much power is concentrated in one family.

The clan has two goals to keep the peace: to help the Mrdini control population growth, so that newly discovered planets are distributed more evenly, and to put a final halt to Hiver advances. They are confident of success - if they can survive sabotage and assassination attempts aimed at destroying all they have worked for.

Wrap Up

Bundle things up to close out the series. But not as good as the earlier books in the series.

Anne Macafrey is the mother of science fiction

Her ability to take us out amongst the stars is unparalleled. The way she creates different life forms and races is outstanding. I think that any one interested in science fiction should definitly read this series

Super Read !!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love all Anne McCaffary books. The Talent series is rated up there with the pern books for greatness. But as far as I'm concerned there is no bad book by this author..

Switched narrator. Oops!

As always Anne McCaffry writes a good story. This book is the fifth in the series and as a paperback is enjoyable. Unfortunately they switched readers for this last book. If you have listened to all of the other books, which have the same reader, and then start this one??? It???s like jumping into a new series, it seams completely divorced from what has come before. Susan Ericksen is a fine reader for OTHER books but her style drastically differs from the rest of the books in this run and breaks this last book away from the end of the series. In short: Switched narrator. Oops!

Production quality fell a bit

A nice re-read of this series. The constant pair-and-multiply refrain gets a bit tiring, but otherwise it’s what you expect of a great author. In this book, there were a few repeats of lines and occasional stops, production issues.

Writing is a huge disappointment.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book really wasn't up to the quality of past Anne McCaffrey books. I swear it was like somebody else wrote this book, using the basic storyline of her past books.

Would you ever listen to anything by Anne McCaffrey again?

I love Anne McCaffrey books and have read pretty much everything she's written.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

I don't care for how she portrays the characters, too sickly sweet.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Tower and the Hive?

The one where they sent to Laria's tower that guy who was a total jerk. That part was like some soap opera. And the Kincaid/Laria romance storyline was absolutely ridiculous!

Any additional comments?

It was like the writer suddenly didn't know her characters and somehow changed them to be weak and fickle. I can't express strongly enough how disappointed I was with this book, which is saying a lot since I'm a huge fan of Anne McCaffrey.
