    Description

How do you tempt an archmage who has everything?

From a dark and dusty tomb, Elminster emerges, seeking the guidance of Mystra, and finds only silence. He is drawn into the clutches of the mysterious and sinister Lady of Shadows. The path he takes will lead to a Realms-shaking confrontation where Elminster has to make the most important choice of his long life.

Whatever he decides, the Realms will be forever changed…

    Too Disjointed

What made the experience of listening to The Temptation of Elminster the most enjoyable?

John Pruden does an excellent job as always. It's really why I went to this series after Erevis Cale.

What was most disappointing about Ed Greenwood’s story?

People say Greenwood's work can get messy. I thought the first two books were great; tightly wound stories that were easy to follow. I get it... this book was suppose to be about how others were effected by Elminster and forces. But, it was just a mess. Characters are all over the place. Not know who is with who and why people are doing what they are doing. Just a real killer. There are huge gaps with no Elminster.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Sadly, it was the very very end of the book. Literally, the last few pages.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

C'mon. This would not be the book to make a movie. Period.

    Any additional comments?

I would still recommend the novel but perhaps do so with a little preparation. Be prepared to look-up names online and take your time. Sometimes, I literally write down names and who they are so I can understand.

    Huh

Would you try another book from Ed Greenwood and/or John Pruden?

    Maybe

What could Ed Greenwood have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story was scattered. There was a lot of talk of characters that would not survive for 30 mins that had nothing to really do with the story. The story of Eliminster would have been less than 2 hrs. Making of a Mage was much much better.

What three words best describe John Pruden’s performance?

    Couldn't save book

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Temptation of Elminster?

all scenes that had nothing to do with the core story. 80% of the book

    Any additional comments?

I would not recommend anyone read this. I read it hoping it would get better and it never did. Even the parts about Eliminster weren't enough to tie everything together. Talking about groups and groups that die to a mist that do not have any relation to the story just dragged it out and made it very boring.

The story is awesome. I like learning more about how Elminster evolves and where he has been.

    Look

The book jumps around a ton, but it's great. Just follow it well, and you'll have a great read.

    Save your money

I listen to a lot. Two or three books a week. I’ve listen to this twice and have no freaking clue what happened. No idea who was talking no idea where they were nor do you know how they mattered. I tried I really really tried.

    Enjoyanle book, Great Performance!

Once again John Pruden proves why he is one of my favorite narrators. He has a talent that puts you inside the written words and makes listening about the legacy of Elminster an enjoyable experience. Some people have collected authors, I have collected narrators.

It's tempting to rate this lower.

Better than Making of a Mage, not quite so good as Elminster in Myth Drannor. Some parts of the plot feel disjointed from the overall narrative, but it does come together somewhat satisfyingly in the end (a trait I'm coming to see as something of a pattern in Greenwood's books).

Rather than enjoy it for a deep and compelling plot, I instead viewed this book as sort of a re-invention and re-affirmation of Elminster as a character. The somewhat disjointed events throughout the book do have their purpose, and it all comes together in the final chapters as we realize why the book is titled the way it is.

And with that said, the journey will continue in the next volume...
