Description
Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a real monster.
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.
This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to take care of his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and well-read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn't felt in 20 years. But there's something off about him. He doesn't have a bank account, he doesn't like going out during the day, and Patricia's mother-in-law insists that she knew him when she was a girl, an impossibility.
When local children go missing, Patricia and the book club members start to suspect James is more of a Bundy than a Beatnik, but no one outside of the book club believes them. Have they read too many true crime books, or have they invited a real monster into their homes?

Fun!
I enjoyed this book and liked the different accents and inflections of the reader. It made the story come alive.

Not my cup of tea
I got 1/4 of the way through this and just had to stop. The author's writing skill is good (witty, keeps your attention, well edited) and the narrator excellent, but the content just turned me off; much too gory and the detail of horrific injuries and the color of injured parts, just ugggghhhhh. The accurate minutiae of living with someone with Alzheimers (down to details like food in her water glass, spit dribbling, etc) was bleak and depressing. And I draw the line at dogs being hurt, so upon reaching that point I realized this story is just making me more disgusted than entertained so I threw in the towel.

Author’s friends must be giving 5 stars
This book is just plain bad. I don’t know how it’s gotten such high marks - other than the author’s friends must’ve reviewed it - because it’s really terrible. First off, it DRAGS and DRAGS on in the middle where all of a sudden you’re listening to “Stepford Wives” - southern women being told what to do by their husbands and what do you know, just going along with it! But this isn’t the 70’s it’s the 90’s and apparently no one would EVER think to say “No” to their husband in the 90’s, right? Oh and then the main character’s husband writes his wife a script for Prozac (professionally not allowed by the way) ...again, she just going along with it instead of standing up to him...and she just zones out of her life while the story turns into a bad Stephen King novel of rape, grown naked men feeding on young naked children and it gets to the point where you’re asking yourself “Why am I still listening to this?!” I had to quit. I was trying to make it to the end to see if this book had any redeeming qualities or story turn but it simply does NOT. Please save yourself the credit, it’s not worth it. Audible Original - did anyone at Audible actually listen to or read this book before putting it on here?! Total garbage.

Disappointing
I wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, it's one of those stories that relies on the main character behaving stupidly, her husband treating her like she's a 5 year old, everyone forgetting very traumatic events and just moving on in order to advance. The reader can suspend disbelief to an extent. This is too much. It kicks you right out of the story.

Started Out Great...
I am from Alabama, so I liked hearing the interesting storyline set in the South. At first the narrator was lovely, then she started getting on my nerves. I enjoyed the story to a point, but by the time it was over, it was just okay. Not my favorite I have read this year. I would recommend it to fans of this genre, but it was just not all that amazing to me.

More juvenile than I thought it’d be...
A lot of the story is pending on Patrica acting and thinking like a 5 year old. It’s a bit excessive... I was really excited about this, but the readers performance is the only reason I held on. They touch on vampire rape as well? Love the reader, didn’t care for the story line. Really tried to push through it but it didn’t get much better. Better ready for maybe a 17 year old.

Big fan of Grady, but this one misses the mark
I have been a fan of Grady since Horrorstor and was really looking forward to this one, but it's just not very good.
I also liked We Sold Our Souls and My Best Friend's Exorcism.
First, the narrator is great. I loved her style.
The book though. Wow. Where do I start?
1. The title - misleading. The book is about one vampire and the Southern Book Club doesn't band together to fight him until 85% of the book is finished. it's not a witty book about southern women fighting vampires at all.
2. The characters - frustrating. They spend most of the book actively trying to make the story stop moving forward. It was like they wanted their lives to be normal so much that they brought me into their world. I am reading a book. Take me somewhere, don't fight me as I want things to develop.
The protagonist is implausibly dumb and the antagonist is not creepy at all, he's just weird and also kind of stupid. You think he's possibly a master manipulator genius, but he's really just a simpleton freak.
3. The story - nothing. Nothing happens. It's a fairly long book with no action until the end. It also has a time jump that makes some sense, but also leaves a huge hole. it takes you completely out of the story.
Overall, this one was a mess. I hope his next one is better

So So
I enjoyed the beginning of this book. I got a kick out of seeing how many books their book club read that I had read. And some of the interactions of the book club ladies was humorous. However, after that it turned a bit dark for me. This is more in line with Stephen King that Kristen Painter. So if you like the dark scary books you may enjoy this but it's not for me.

good story with a few twists
My only issue is that I didnt expect some of the more adult content. Please be advised if listening around little ones that there is some sexual content.

Smart, bloody fun
A wild ride of a novel with vivid characters. The writing is very tongue-in-cheek and endearing but the plot also gets super dark featuring some pretty disturbing scenes. The voice actress is great too.

Genius Voice Actor
I agree with a lot of reviews that this thrilling yet horrifying story is a bit slow in the middle, but the voice acting made up for it!! I could not stop listening to it! Hendrix creates haunting images and grotesque atmospheres, while Turpin brings it all to live. I might have some nightmares in the future, but I will recommend this audiobook to anyone who will listen.

Empfehlung
