Description
2,000 years of history in one riveting afternoon
A country both admired and feared, Germany has been the epicenter of world events time and again: the Reformation, both World Wars, the fall of the Berlin Wall. It did not emerge as a modern nation until 1871 - yet today, Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy and a standard-bearer of liberal democracy.
"There's no point studying the past unless it sheds some light on the present", writes James Hawes in this brilliantly concise history that has already captivated hundreds of thousands of readers and listeners. "It is time, now more than ever, for us all to understand the real history of Germany."
Commentaires
“An excellent little book . . . [Hawes] has a sense of humour, and a sharp eye for similarities between then and now.” (The Spectator)

Antifa book? Really?
The history story is written very dry. It is as if we are walking a timeline, not walking through history in story form. Then, from World War 2 on, it becomes disappointing. Nationalism fears finishes the book. That’s not history. That is an opinion piece. Find another book.

The narrator can’t pronounce German
I am happy with the content of the book, but unfortunately the narrator can’t pronounce German names and words, which makes listening painful to me.

Best Perspective on German History
This book puts forth historical comparisons of east vs west German with American north vs south that I have never previously considered. An excellent book.

I learned a great deal.
My German history was lacking. I now have a context for German & European news.

Overall great with some reservations
As a German, this book gave me a different view on my history. Although to me it seems little logical to explain today’s behaviour by the past. We’ve been scarcely conditioned by our history classes at school beyond the World Wars. To someone who’s been socialised in a different schooling system, this might not be obvious.
Also: the speaker’s pronoun citation of German words made my ears bleed.
Apart from those reservations: great book

Ummm....
It is not easy to give a review of this book. On one side I found it intriguing, on the other side almost polemical. I think it is written with a slightly negative attitude towards the Germans. Not that I am German or would feel offended, but it paints quite a dark picture of the Prussians and especially what the author calls the "EastElbians". I am not sure if this dark picture is justified or not. One could say the book is thought provoking. I think the audio book would be bearable, but if one is able to understand German, the book's narrators attempt to speak German is grotesque and for a "history book" he over dramatizes his speech.

Concise and informative
Informative, entertaining and concise history of Germany. Can serve as a good introduction.
I enjoyed it.
Although you might take offense if you live in East Elbia :).

Hawes in Germany
What a remarkable achievement to cram so much history into such a short book. But Hawes has a thread that runs all the way through this book and it’s not one many other historians pick up on. Now I’ll be the print version
