Shortlisted for Audiobook of the Year at the British Book Awards 2020.

Winner of Best Solo Narration at the New York Festival Radio Awards 2020

It is 20 years since the events of La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One unfolded and saw the baby Lyra Belacqua begin her life-changing journey.

It is almost 10 years since listeners left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, best0selling His Dark Materials sequence.

Now, in The Secret Commonwealth, we meet Lyra Silvertongue. And she is no longer a child....

The second volume of Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now 20 years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right.

Theirs is a world at once familiar and extraordinary and they must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search for what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert and the mystery of the elusive Dust.

The Secret Commonwealth is truly a book for our times; a powerful adventure and a thought-provoking look at what it is to understand yourself, to grow up and make sense of the world around you. This is storytelling at its very best from one of our greatest writers.

Commentaires

“Michael Sheen throws himself wholeheartedly into narrating this sequel to La Belle Sauvage and listeners will be rapt. For the ever-expanding international cast of characters, Sheen conjures a multitude of accents and delivers rapid-fire conversations between them. He's in step with the text at every turn; when situations become fraught or dangerous, Sheen ramps up the tension exquisitely. Thanks to Pullman's intricate storytelling and Sheen's propulsive narration, listeners will be on the edge of their seats right up to the cliff-hanger ending.” (AudioFile)

Expectations were high

After the volume one , the expectations were high, and so was the disappointment. Still OK, but stretched out thinly, and narrator ruins it by exaggeration. The end is missing, I presume that sooner or later the story will continue in a Volume 3, but still, it feels like the the book ends midd sentence, leaving me disappointed.

I Didn't Love It

Missing a lot of the charm shining from La Belle Sauvage Not a great deal happens Once upon a time not having a daemon was unthinkable now it's everywhere. Lyra goes on a journey bouncing from one person who helps her to another Political Commentary is very thinly veiling (The evil petrol company is called TP) Malcolm's position is borderline disturbing

A wild voyage of intertwining adventures and drama

Here we see a grown up Lyra facing down the Magisterium and the equally threatening challenges of the adult world. The story throws her, and Malcolm, and Pantalaimon, each alone, into a whirlwind Eastward trip through Europe and ultimately to locations in the Middle East. Some parts of the story feel a bit less organic than others (I was happy enough with the Welsh detour) but they all fit together so that the heroes' paths overlap. Michael Sheen's narration and ownership of the huge cast of characters is what glues and elevates it. Great escapism. I look forward to the next installment.

Exquisite!

Once again, Philip Pullman masterfully told a story that I personally, waited patiently since “La Belle Sauvage”, and, I’ll be waiting patiently for the third book as well. I expected nothing less from one of the greatest writers of our time. You just have to read this book!

Thrilling, disturbing story breathtakingly well read.

A thrilling new chapter in the story of Lyra Silvertongue, and one quite unlike the ones that have come before, being far more akin to our world of struggle and political horrors and adult pain, as it must be, being the story of a young woman caught in events far broader and more evil than any she has encountered before. The vast cast is brilliantly given voice by Michael Sheen, probably the best audiobook narrator I have listened to. Every character has their own voice, every scene is described with tenderness, or humour or in breathtaking vivid action. A triumph whose conclusion cannot come soon enough.

Disappointed

I should start by saying that I'm an enormous fan of Pullman, I love the original trilogy and have read it many times. I am disappointed with the new book. don't miss me, it's great, but just a few characters that aren't explored deeply enough are introduced and some plot points are just pushed too much. while in the original books I never knew what was going to happen, here I could predict the book in advance after a few chapters. it feels like instead of having been constructed in the moment, this book had the end or story written first, and then the rest of the chapters was filled in one by one (exaggerated but kinda true) still a fan though, and still liked it

Back to old form almost

A super cliffhanger and a much more intriguing story than in the last book. Can't imagine any reader will approve of the rater brutish love story clumsily unfolding. Awkward and without any substance. This aside it is especially good as an audio book although some detail in the story is sadly missing. The finaley is a bit out of the blue... Loved it.

outstanding dramatic reading

of a finely woven tale of growing complexity and suspense that forms an excellent companion to the earlier His Dark Materials.

Fantastic speaker, mostly good storytelling

Audio book/ speaker: Reading the book yourself is fun but in this case I would certainly recommend for everyone who is interested to listen to it in audio format! Michael Sheen brings the story across expertly and gives it such rich atmosphere and complexety that it almost feels like you just saw it happen in front of your own eyes! He is excellent at constructing and depicting the different personality traits of each character merely by the use of voice and tonality! A pleasure to listen to! story: As for the story itself, this one is much more complex than its prequel "La Belle Sauvage". Whereas "La Belle sauvage" could easily be read by older children, who have read the "His dark materials" series beforehand, I would recommend for them to wait a few years until they read/ listen to this one. Not only does it have a more complex storyline, it also includes themes more adult than its prequel. Though it has a colourful, fantasy looking cover, it's definitely not a children's book. Otherwise this is a good adventure narrative, all set in Lyra's world which includes deamons and other creatures part of the "secret Commonwealth". It's also a sort of coming of age story for Lyra, who may be 20 already, but of course coming of age isn't limited to puberty. Apart from that it is a story with multiple narrative arcs that all lead to some bigger picture which is still unknown thus far and will be explored in the third book of the series. Conclusion: If you enjoyed "His dark materials" and/ or other books by Philip Pullman set in this world, you will probably enjoy this one, though it is more adult and darker than the others. If you're a newcomer and you've read "La Belle sauvage" , I would recommend to also read "His dark materials", no matter what age you are. As for this one, it is quite lengthy and you'd have to enjoy a long adventure tale and when you're still new to this world, it might be a bit too intense to keep you going all the way to the end, if you're not really interested in it all.

Really good but sometimes problematic

Really good but sometimes problematic. Without spoilers, certain characters act slightly odd and uncomfortably. Otherwise, really good story.
