    Description

Lyra and Will, the two ordinary children whose extraordinary adventures begin in The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife, are in unspeakable danger. With help from Iorek Byrnison the armored bear and two tiny Gallivespian spies, they must journey to a dank and gray-lit world where no living soul has ever gone.

All the while, Dr. Mary Malone builds a magnificent amber spyglass. An assassin hunts her down. And Lord Asriel, with troops of shining angels, fights his mighty rebellion, a battle of strange allies and shocking sacrifice.

As war rages and dust drains from the sky, the fate of the living, and the dead, finally comes to depend on two children and the simple truth of one simple story. The Amber Spyglass reveals that story, bringing Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials to an astonishing conclusion.

"A literary masterpiece...[that] caps the most magnificent fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings and puts Harry Potter to shame...A page-turning story that builds to a powerful finish." (Oregonian)

really the best audiobooks i've ever heard

Great ating, great story, i cried at the end. The author and the rest of the cast deliver perfectly the situation, and the three books flow so well together, i couldn't recommand it more

    Sophisticated and Thought Provoking!

Just when you thought this series of books couldn't get any more fantastic, the author steps up to an entirely new level, introducing characters and concepts that are admittedly pretty advanced for youngsters (although my 7 and 11 year olds absolutely love these books). For early teens, it is a perfect introduction to philosophical and ethical ideas that require some serious thought. The nature of religion versus dogma, the concept of self, the idea of power of self-sacrifice, the portrayal of multiple realities, all are explored in new and fascinating ways.

The audio production of the entire series is top-notch and riveting, and has resulted in my driving around the block many times just to get to the end of the next chapter.

Contrary to claims that this book is anti-religion - it is more a criticism of political authority, ignorance, and power. This is not the God of our world - this is an alternate universe. The church in this story is a repressive political entity that relies on fear and intimidation.

It is frightening to see how many people fear these books and wish to ban them rather than to see them as a starting point for discussion of ideas (do not underestimate your children and their ability to comprehend these ideas). These books do not challenge anyone's faith - it really points out the the pitfalls of blind faith versus the true power of actual deeds. Pulling these books out of libraries as some wish to do would be a tragedy, and it seems to reflect more of a lack of faith in one's own beliefs than anything else.

an exceptional story that's had bad press

Forget the political reviews of this series as an atheist anthem. This is simply a wonderful story with rich characters, fantastic worlds and heartwarming themes about friendship and loyalty. The full cast reading is worth every penny-a must listen!

A worthwhile but somewhat disappointing end

Pullman continues to add complex twists and turns to his final novel in this trilogy, do not miss the first two before you listen to this one! I enjoyed this final novel, but there were MANY more characters than usual, and though I enjoyed the complexities of them, there seemed like too many to all be properly developed. The religious (or arguably anti-religious) overtones become much more of a focus here, which I did not like even though I am not religious. Though it is still very suspenseful and full of adventure, twists and unpredictable turns like the other two novels I walked away feeling a little disappointed. Perhaps that is because this believable fantasy trilogy is now done.

    Very dissapointed

I really struggled to finish this final book in the series. It seemed so anticlimactic and took forever to get to the actual problem. The author kept creating several side stories that ultimately had no point being in the book. It felt like he was reaching to get a certain number of pages so he just kept on randomly writing. Definitely won't read again

    Imaginatioon People

Since when did imagination go by the way of a fallen leaf from the big tree? I have heard so much of how bad this series seems to be but as a Pastor I have heard nothing but happiness and excitement from what comes out of this story. Nobody says anywhere in these books that you have to beleive what you hear. The fun of these types of books is to bring you out of such a hard way of living and go into a world that just takes your mind off your own worries. Love the books and gosh - there are only three in the series. I look forward to more.

A great finish to a fabulous trilogy!

His Dark Materials ends with this book (although there is a follow-up, _Lyra's Oxford_, which includes a short story, a map of Lyra's Oxford, and some other materials), the longest of the three.

The various storylines are tied up nicely, though some may not care for how things are left with the two main characters. Despite this, I loved it - this book and the series - and would love for additional stories from Pullman about the characters and places he's brought to life in these books (as he did with the above-mentioned book).

Great books for children or adults of all ages!

    Pretty Disappointing

The story just doesn't hold together. The creativity and imagination, which was high in the fist book of the trilogy, disappears.

The characters and story lines are inconsistent and at times downright boring. The story line involving the Amber Spyglass itself is painfully boring and seems to be more of an Orson Scott Card ripoff of the Piggies from Card's Ender series.

Lastly, the ending is a total let down when the anticipated temptation is not played up as it was built up throughout the story.

At times I just wanted to turn it off, but hung in there only because I listened to the first two and wanted to see how it ended.

    Weakest of the 3

Loved books 1 & 2. Book 3 is just... okay. I was expecting a little more from the APOCALYPSE battle scenes. It was kinda one of those - the battles of all battles is happening over there but lets not bother with that, I'd rather talk about what's happening over here. Maybe it was just me - seemed a bit rushed. Possibly because the real story is that of Lyra and I get that but I was hoping for a bit more.
Along with that, I'm not one of those thin-skinned Christians who takes offense to any kind of slightly anti-christian/faith stuff - my faith and my God are strong enough to handle a little jibe here and there, so if you are, you might have already quit the series but if you haven't, you've been warned.

    Spoiler -

His take on the garden of Eden story being really a coming of age/woman flowering/hitting puberty and original sin allegory doesn't really jibe with the actual Bible (be fruitful and multiply!) but hey - it's a fantasy novel, so don't get too twisted up on it.

An unfortunate end to a great first two books.

The full cast performance is wonderful, as with the first two books. However, I felt tortured as I tried to finish this final book. It feels as though everything that was being set-up in the first two books vanished alltogether, or was present in the thinest ghost of plot and dialogue. This series ends not with a bang, but with a barely audible whisper lost amongst the sea of over-blown emotions and overly descriptive deepities. If you liked or loved the first two books, you may want to skip this and dream about a much better, and existant climax.

    Disappointing ending

I am not going to say much, except that for me, the ending felt forced, unsatisfying and artificial. Same as with so many other trilogies, the build up was great and the ending completely disappointing.

After two great parts a let down.

'The Amber Spyglass' is the third and last book in Phillip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. It is good, but not nearly as engaging as the previous two books in the series, 'The Golden Compass' and 'The Subtle Knife'. I must say that I didn't love 'The Amber Spyglass', but I'm glad I listen to this audio book.

The books in 'His Dark Materials' are the kind of books that make you happy to listen to. They are full of magic, interesting characters and weird events. In a nutshell, they make you dream and awake your imagination. Additionally you have come so far with the first and second part that you definitely want to know how the story ends.

From my point of view, that is extremely important, and that is the reason why I recommend 'The Amber Spyglass', even though I only give it 3 stars. Truth to be told, the real value of this book is not to be found as a standalone, but rather as the conclusion of an outstanding trilogy that is already a classic.

Most fascinating & beautiful finale of the Series

The story culminates and comes to what feels like a beautiful end/conclusion. I never got bored during the story and sometimes even stepped back a few phrases/sentences or even a chapter since I really wanted to understand what was going on in the sometimes fast-paced course of events (who knows the series, can probably imagine, that events will occur in a much denser frequency in this finale of the series). The cast and well distinguishable voices of the characters help a lot keeping an overview in these scenarios and is – just as in the previous parts and in my humble opinion, of course – very skilled in conveying the emotions of the protagonists. I’ll most definitely listen to the series a few more times since it’s altogether one of the most beautifully written stories – including a plausible approach to the Mystery, that “Consciousness” still represents to Science, as much as “Dark Matter” and “Dark Energy” does. And the idea of forming such an – as I would intuitively call it – “Epic” around it, makes it an even more exciting field to me now. Well, whatever we will find out about the Mysteries in a later time, the “Gedankenexperiment” (thought experiment) of these novels will certainly be one of the most intriguing approaches to this topic, that no one can at this point approach with the slightest glimpse of certainty. And yet, the imaginations, that Mr. Pullman presents in his series, are astonishingly fascinating and even feel plausibly woven with the current scientific facts. And the way, the novels also interconnect science with religious mythology/belief, are also part of their fascinating attraction to me. All in all, I can 100% recommend this novel (series) for everyone with the slightest philosophical inclination, regardless if from the theological or scientific community.

not on paar with the first 2 books

I had so high expectations from the first two books and this is just dissatisfying and disappointing . The difference in quality between the journey and Revelation is staggering , what a waste of potential endings.

    the performance is still amazing
