Description

Twelve billionaires rule the United States, while those called freemen are forced to serve the rich. But that was 60 years ago, before the Scarlet Plague. In this post-apocalyptic novella, a ragged and tattered old man tells his progeny of what life was like before The Scarlet Plague appeared - and wiped out civilization as they knew it.

The world must survive

This book was very different than what I was expecting. It is a story of loss and survival in a primitive world. I enjoyed it!

WOW, IMAGINE POST-APOCALYPTIC NOVEL WRITTEN IN 1912

This was far different from “The Call Of The Wild” and “White Fang.” Still, it was well thought out and somewhat believable. Since Jack London could not possibly be aware of the immense advances made by advanced civilizations, the world 60 years after the plague of 2013 would not be as savage as he portrays it. At least, I do not think so.

I certainly enjoyed both reading and at the same time listening to the story being narrated. The reader did a great job.

Good story until it broke the 4th wall.

Narrator was great, story going along well until the author broke the 4th wall to make a point about language. That brought me completely out of the story. Got back in, but it took a while.

main character was a douche, story good though

The whole thing is basically an old man in a post apocalyptic world, telling the story of the apocalypse to his grandkids. I liked apocalypse base of the story a lot!

But the stuff the main character tells about his personal experiences of it are appalling. He is a really crappy person and I found it difficult to like him enough to finish the book. But it wasnt too expensive and still worth the listen since it's so short. A longer book and I don't think I could have put up with his crappy morals much longer.

Great book. I had never read it or heard it before

The description of the panic from the plague was excellent. It was dated but still enjoyable. Really bothered me they did not rescue the woman from the abuser and instead they let her keep being beaten. But considering this was written in 1912 it was more acceptable at the time.

Thoroughly Enjoyed!

I read this in highschool. I now homeschool my own children and decided to *read* it again before grading their book reports on this story. I forgot how much I loved London!

Great story by jack london

I was not aware jack London wrote stories like this. A short but excellent story and though a bit dated it's still relevant. I could see this happening in todays society. Recommend anyone to listen to this story and albeit short this is a story i would love to add to my hard copy collection
