    Description

Twelve billionaires rule the United States, while those called freemen are forced to serve the rich. But that was 60 years ago, before the Scarlet Plague. In this post-apocalyptic novella, a ragged and tattered old man tells his progeny of what life was like before The Scarlet Plague appeared - and wiped out civilization as they knew it.

    Excellent

Listened to this book during the COVID-19 outbreak. Very interesting and thought provoking. Jack London's great imagination leaves me wondering how COVID-19 will change our lives.

    London's Best

This under the radar classic is superb and is what I believe to be London's best work. Taking place in 2073 but published in 1912, it is wondrous to see the version of our upcoming decades from the point of view form someone at the turn of the 20th century. The apocalypse starts in the 20teens, the main character, now an old man, describes the fall of humanity as he lived through it. Laying the ground walk for books such as Lord of the Flies, The Stand, and The Walking Dead, and just under 2 and a half hours long, this book is now on my relisten to list and will be reconsumed every few months. -Bold City Matt

WOW, IMAGINE POST-APOCALYPTIC NOVEL WRITTEN IN 1912

This was far different from “The Call Of The Wild” and “White Fang.” Still, it was well thought out and somewhat believable. Since Jack London could not possibly be aware of the immense advances made by advanced civilizations, the world 60 years after the plague of 2013 would not be as savage as he portrays it. At least, I do not think so.

I certainly enjoyed both reading and at the same time listening to the story being narrated. The reader did a great job.

    The world must survive

This book was very different than what I was expecting. It is a story of loss and survival in a primitive world. I enjoyed it!

    A Classic / Worth Listening

The timelessness of a book is a key to its success. Even though the time period is not current it is the behavior of the characters that makes this book interesting.

    Really good. Reader was excellent.

Enjoyed this book. Very timely during Covid19 scare. I say scare because it doesn't come close to being a pandemic like the one in this book. It seems the actors and news media wanted us to believe it was the End. But they are just trying to create social engineering. For you next listen I would recommend Bambi:A Life In The Woods By Felix Salten read by this Narrator. Be sure and read the Wiki description and you will see that Bambi had too much adult content for Disney. and for Hitler, who banned it. And while you are reading it think about NYC. Exodus movement of the people!

main character was a douche, story good though

The whole thing is basically an old man in a post apocalyptic world, telling the story of the apocalypse to his grandkids. I liked apocalypse base of the story a lot!

But the stuff the main character tells about his personal experiences of it are appalling. He is a really crappy person and I found it difficult to like him enough to finish the book. But it wasnt too expensive and still worth the listen since it's so short. A longer book and I don't think I could have put up with his crappy morals much longer.

    Thoroughly Enjoyed!

I read this in highschool. I now homeschool my own children and decided to *read* it again before grading their book reports on this story. I forgot how much I loved London!
