Description

In 1860, a sloop drifted into New York Harbor. Not a soul on board - just blood from cabin to deck. Looted coins led to Bowery thug Albert Hicks, the ax slayer who turned his shipmates into chum.

His crimes were absolutely fiendish. His execution was pure ballyhoo. It drew nearly ten thousand bloodthirsty sightseers to the city - including the enterprising showman P. T. Barnum. Refreshments were served as the most notorious and unrepentant mass murderer of the era made history as one of America’s first celebrity killers.

The Pirate is part of Bloodlands, a chilling collection of short addictive historical narratives from bestselling true-crime master Harold Schechter. Spanning a century in our nation’s murderous past, Schechter resurrects nearly forgotten tales of madmen and thrill-killers that dominated the most sensational headlines of their day.

20minute article stretched to 90minutes - No point

This was one of those rare Audible reads that, after I'd finished, had me thinking I'd spent more time listening to it than the listen itself was worth.

Before I got to Chapter 11 I was wondering why the book was called "Pirate" since it was really just the story of the murderer of three people being brought to justice. Because the murderer was charged with piracy? For that reason I would have give only one-star (or maybe two) for the Story category.

Story: 3 stars = Good

But then... Chapter 11 (of a total of 13 chapters). Only then did the book finally give the answer to why its title is "Pirate".

The narrator did his best with what he had to work with.

Performance: 4 stars = Great

Anyhow, it is what it is. Not every purchase can be an excellent read or a great read or a good read. This one was mediocre to good at best. Not poor, so there's that.

Overall: 2.5 stars = Mediocre (because it had no point, could have been -- but wasn't -- a compelling read that was basically a news magazine article that could've been told in 20 minutes rather than stretched out over 90 minutes).

Note to those who decide to get the book (because, like I said, it's better than poor and kinda good):
If you decide not to finish it, at least read Chapter 11 before abandoning ship.

Good

A nice, interesting and quick read that gets right down to brass tacks but in a captivating way.

Short and sweet

I love the little true crime short. Steven Weber is wonderful as always. I look forward to the rest of the series.

CSI NY - A century ago

Historical and very graphic story about an American serial killer, which at times is a bit confusing with numerous other historical accounts intersecting. Crime scene investigation on a boat and great investigating brings the lowlife to justice, despite loopholes in the system. Great performance!

Enjoy a interesting look at an American pirate

my only thing to say as my opinion. Narrator is nice to listen too. Narrator could've been a bit more active in producing sounds of characters. As it seem to be hardly to no difference between him reading a paper in front of him, to him reading out a characters dialogue.

This is an incredible story. It touches into the savagery of man. Leaves you wondering how humans could be so cruel.

Wonderfully told short story

I truly loved the narrator’s pace and at times excitement. Will definitely purchase books with this narrator.

A Bit Of Forgotten Lore

I had never heard this story but it was an interesting one. I also enjoyed the opening description of the oyster craze.
