This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far - a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes. "Wake up, genius." So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades.

Really good

Description
An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively listenable stories.
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.
As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King's propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

"Narrator Will Patton turns this story into an audio blockbuster.... King's usual sprawling cast of characters is also present, and suffice it to say that Patton does them all justice." (AudioFile)

King still wears the crown!
Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, I often wonder what people expect from a King novel. I couldn’t stop listening to this audio book Patton’s reading was utterly brilliant. He has a quite voice but his performance really draws you in deep. The story build beautifully reminded me a lot of True Detective but with a much better ending. Similar to Revival in how it builds and builds right up to the end only on a smaller scale. However I enjoyed the ending a lot more than Revival’s end. Both are great stories though King still proves why he wears the crown

Boring....
This book never went anywhere. It was way too long for such few moments of mystery or intrigue. I have been a SK fan for a long time but this is just not one I would recommend. Annoying voices and unsympathetic characters.

short and uninspired; not your typical King novel.
one of the most anti-climactic and boring King novels I've ever read, and I've read all his Major Works, and all his short story collections. The outsider felt short by comparison with underdeveloped characters.

Average Story - Dreadful Narration
I found the story interesting for the first half then a little predictable after that. The real problem was the narration, especially the voice of Holly. There cant be a live person who speaks with the inflection/cadence the read gave her and I had to suffer through the announce to get to the end of the story.

It caught my interest...but became toooo long!
I’m a Steven King fan and loved most of his books that I have read but there are a few I’ve read that ends up like The Outsider where he captures your total attention and then just goes on and on and on....I did like the narrator until Holly came around and then it became too annoying. I actually did not finish this book!

Disappointing From Stephen King
I’ve been a Stephen King fan for many years, I’ve listened to/read all of the classics and The Outsider seriously disappointed me, the extremely descriptive writing style I’ve grown fond of makes no real appearance in this book which makes it a really hollow experience overall. The ending is the definition of anti-climactic, you spend 17 hours waiting for the big finish and it’s just a big middle finger in your face. The performance wasn’t very good either which can ruin an audio book almost as quick as it’s poor writing. Overall pretty bummed and wouldn’t recommend.

King is Slipping
King is a wordy, if skillful writer, and his character development is terrific. But, he seems to be running short of new plot ideas. In The Outsider, he just recycles old ideas. Will Patton does his best with mediocre material. You can skip this one.

how is this book getting high ratings????
I usually like anything by Stephen King, but this story was just poorly thought out and poorly researched. King's knowledge of Texas geography is severely lacking. The bad guy doesn't show up in news video at the courthouse for some reason, but his image is somehow caught in security footage at the train station and in Ohio? Too many inconsistencies and way too unbelievable -- not the supernatural evil guy so much, more so the characters and their reactions. The whole thing was just silly and impossible to buy into. I kept listening hoping for some "ah ha" moment that would tie it all together, and came away even more severely disappointed by the ending. Wasted time and money.

I couldn't put my phone down!
This is the first audio book I finished within just days of purchasing it. Sometimes I find my mind wandering when I listen to books but this story left me wanting more, even long after I had finished with it. And funnily enough, I even felt sad when the story came to an end.
I absolutely adore King but even I will admit that sometimes, he likes to take his time with the build-up, which can become tedious. However, with this book I feel like King has outdone himself again.
The characters not only arouse your interest but also keep it during the whole story. I felt like I was personally involved in their lives. I drew my own conclusions, I chose sides, had opinions, felt angry, upset and even heartbroken. I actually felt like I knew them in person. Yet King reveals nothing, keeping you in suspense, making you question your opinions, thoughts and feelings, as you delve deeper into his world. You will not be bored for one moment!
It may not be the most original story but it's enthralling, eccentric, mysterious and exciting with a hint of King, just the way I like it.
The narrator has a great voice and portrays the characters and story amazingly well. I would definitively love to listen to him again. So very pleased that I purchased this book.☺

Buy this book immediately! Sofort kaufen!
I have been a fan of King's books since I was 12 or 13 years old. These days I listen to them rather than read them myself. And if there is a new "King", I will devour it immediately. And if Will Patten is the performer - all the better. He is amazing! This new book is about what happens when an unstopable force hits an unmoveable object. Terry Maitland, a pillar of The Flint City community is arrested for the terrible murder of a small boy. All of the evidence Points unmistakingly to him. But at the time the murder took place, Terry definately was not in town. The book is shocking, intense, exciting and it won't let you go until you are done. Brilliant!

Kein Wunder, angesichts seines gigantischen Outputs.

Great book but difficult for on the go
Compelling story. Sadly the speaker changes his voice between different parts so much that it is difficult to hear on the go. One part is spoken very softly and if you turn up the volume your ears are ready to burst when the next part is spoken very loud. Difficult if you listening to the book on the go.

Suspense to the end
I loved listening to this audio book. King painted the characters very vividly, though not in a way that would have given anything away. The reader has to choses a side by him- or herself. The story is absolutely compelling. It was beautifully told, the speaker kept my attention at all times. I would recommend this read to anyone who enjoys crime and horror.
