    Description

In the internationally best-selling The Bone Season, Paige Mahoney escaped the brutal penal colony of Sheol I, but now her problems have only just begun: many of the fugitives are still missing and she is the most wanted person in London. As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take center stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.

    Series maturing nicely!

I admit to have being undecided following the first book in the series, "The Bone Season." Though the alternate-historical world-building had its compelling aspects, I found the Rephaim a bit too gothic. That's still the case, but it doesn't matter, because like all good stories, this is now clearly a human drama, with the Rephaim merely part of the scenery. The alternate history is more vivid and plausible than ever, despite elements both counterfactual and supernatural; this London is eerily familiar.

A word needs to be said about the narrator, Alana Kerr. Hers is clearly the voice of protagonist Paige, Irish accent, weary compassion, and all. She does not have a huge expressive range, and sometimes distinguishing character voices can be tricky in dialogue. However, there is one moment in this narration that makes up for all the defects. Usually narrators simply "punt" when confronted with verse the reader is supposed to imagine as sung; they either just read the verse, or they improvise embarrassing half-melodies. Not so Ms. Kerr. I won't say any more about the scene here, except that it was deeply moving, demonstrating extraordinary musical and affective sensibility.

I liked it as well as the The Bone Season

I don't love this series. There is still way too much going on to fully follow all the threads and all the characters. I liked the narrator better this time around. Maybe I have just gotten used to her. I will probably listen to the next book when it comes out, but I really need the author to start giving a better indication of where the story is going.

    I don't want to wait!

I really enjoyed this listen. Paige is young, and she feels young. But she doesn't bug me because her struggles to figure things out don't feel contrived. (I generally hate when the reader knows what is happening far before the character.). The books build on some established ground, but they feel fresh and new.

As with Bone Season, the story moves along fairly slowly. Little time passes, and not that much happens. This doesn't bother me at all, but it could be an issue for dinner listeners.

I enjoy the narration. her voice is engaging, and the different characters are clearly distinguished.

I can't believe I have to wait a year for the next installment.

    WOW!!!

It took me awhile to get caught up in the bone season but when I did it really sucked me in! In this the second installment The Mime Order I was pulled in from the start. Excellent story great characters vivid details! The narrator is fantastic! Loved getting to learn more about the syndicate and its separate cohorts! Can't wait to see just how much more Paige can grow and excel through the rest of the series. Book 3 won't come soon enough!!!

    Great sequel

I had to go back and re listen to some of the first book to remember all the terminology, overall I really enjoyed the mime order and I think it's worth a listen. The narrator is great.

    Samantha does it again

I'm not too fond of sequels, but Samantha Shannon has a wonderful writing style that keeps the story immediate.

Alana Kerr's voice is like a breath of fresh air.

    Love this series!

What a bright young talent. I found this book to better than the first. This is the 2nd in a series of 7. I can't wait for book 3 next March. I do hate waiting and this left us with a bigger cliff hanger than the first which I hate, but at least I don't have to wait too long. :)

A little slow at times... The Mime Order didn't disappoint with a climatic ending leaving you hanging for book 3... Bravo!

    Great plot twists!

This is an excellently written story with some great imagery and plot twists that I wasn't expecting! I would have listened to it all at once if life didn't get in my way! Excellent narration that was easy to listen to as well. I cannot suggest this e-book enough!

    A Little Uneven

In Book 2 of The Bone Season, Paige has escaped Sheol I and finds herself the most wanted person in London. Now, she has to grapple with her loyalties, and the corrupt machinations of the Syndicate.

This book moves at a slower pace than the first one, especially for the first half. Paige's feelings about Jax, about Warden and the Rephaim, and about the Syndicate in general are confused, and a bit muddled.

In a sense, it makes sense for her to be conflicted. But her conflict is just not very well-wrought, and it just comes across as uneven and inconsistent to the reader. The good news is, we get a better sense of the Syndicate and how it works in this book, and the magic system becomes a little clearer as well.

However, I'm sorry to say that, unlike the last book, this one does end on a cliffhanger, which, in my opinion, is just bad writing. There are better ways to get the reader invested in the next installment. Also, there are a few twists, but I did not find any of them particularly surprising.

I am still looking forward to reading the next book. The central conflict is compelling, and I appreciate that the relationship between Paige and Warden has not descended into pure sap (at least, not yet). Paige is a strong character, and though she frequently gets her butt kicked, she seldom becomes the tropey damsel-in-distress that still plagues this genre. In fact, more often than not, she is the one doing the saving, and that is refreshing.

The Rephaim are also complex--the bad ones are really bad, but the good ones are more ambiguous than they are good, which is good character building. Things are not black and white here, and it's that ambiguity that makes for a complex world with complex characters.

Alana Kerr Collins maintains her monotone, unfortunately. Her narration is not horrendous, but I just wish she's breathe a little more life into it. I will say, though, that I thought I heard a little more distinction between voices than there was in the first book. Maybe in the third, she'll hit the mark.
