    Description

    Brought to you by Penguin.

The brand-new series from Zoe Sugg and Amy McCulloch.

Illumen Hall is an elite boarding school. Tragedy strikes when the body of a student is discovered at their exclusive summer party - on her back is an elaborate tattoo of a magpie.

When new girl Audrey arrives the following term, running from her own secrets back home in America, she is thrown into solving the case. Despite her best efforts to avoid any drama, her new roommate Ivy was close to the murdered girl, and the two of them can't help but get pulled in.

The two can't stand each other, but as they are drawn deeper into the mystery of this strange and terrible murder, they will discover that something dangerous is at the heart of their superficially perfect school.

    Welcome to the Magpie Society.

One for Sorrow is told via the alternating first-person perspectives of the lead characters Audrey - written by Amy - and Ivy - written by Zoe - with the narrative jointly plotted by both authors.

Nice story but some unfinished elements

Voices should act more vividly. I was a bit disappointed by the acting. The story was overall interesting but some elements remain unsolved (maybe they will be in the next book?)

I AM SHOCKED. You have to listen!

I had never read Zoe’s books before because they seemed to be more for kids. But when I heard she was coming out with a different type of book with a friend, Amy, I was intrigued. Let me tell you if you chose to just read this book instead of listen YOU ARE MISSING OUT. The production of this audiobook is amazing. Especially when they introduce the podcast. Chills ran down my spine!!! Can’t wait for the next one.

SPOILER ALERT KINDA. Read ahead if you dare.

The only thing I really wish was different in terms of storyline was I wish we hadn’t found out about who was producing the podcast until the end or even not at all. The secret podcast was so gossip girl and really my favorite part of the book until we found out who it was. I also found the book was going too fast at times and I wish they had taken their time doing things. But that just might be me! I love listening to 16hr books!

a rambling tale with no resolution

I understand that this may be part of a series, but there is absolutely no story arc in this book. it begins with an interesting plot concept - murder at a boarding school - but the story never develops/evolves.

    The Magpie Society

I love this book! I wasn't sure how much I would like it at first, I do love all of Zoe Sugg's books so I was pretty sure I'd at least like it. I couldn't stop listening to it and enjoyed it so much! I hope there will be a 2nd book.

    Addicting read!

I managed to listen to this book in ONE DAY! I honestly didn’t intend on doing this, but I couldn’t stop listening! The story really gripped me! It felt like there was an element of cozy familiarity but then again I haven’t read anything like it in a long time. The narrators did a great job, the plot was something I couldn’t completely figure out ahead of time and it kept me interested the entire time!
Fantastic read, really cannot wait for more! Loved, loved, LOVED! Congrats Zoe and Amy!

    Surprisingly Good

Overall this book was good. My biggest issues were the narrator's accents...just bad, the length of the book was too short, the "friendship" between Audrey and Ivy is weakly developed, and the clearly under researched American character. It was painfully obvious that neither of the authors are American. If you are going to write in a character that is from a different country at least do some more digging about American phrases. Most of Audrey's questions in this book about "British slang" make her feel like a complete idiot. For example in the US we use the word tomfoolery (the characteristic unfamiliar with the word for some reason), and a Georgian girl would never in a million years call a line at a coffee shop a "queue"(also I realize these are small things buut... they add up). I get they wanted to have an American character to sell more books but yikes.

    Boring and Blah Accent Narrations

I finished it but this book left to much of a cliff hanger. The characters are weak. I can see why someone might like it.

    Great YA read

The story was amazing and the narration and voices were really great. I loved the accents. The only thing that kept the performance from getting full stars is that on certain narrators the volume would be MUCH louder and it would blast my eardrums. Incredibly unpleasant and jarring. It would go from normal volume to SHOUTING when there was no shouting in the scene. I’m not sure if it was an editing issue or a technical issue, but sometimes it was just too much to get through and I’d have to stop it and come back later.

Consistent volume unless needed for dramatic effect would be much appreciated for the next book.

    Not too deep

I wish the story was more detailed and thought out. There could have been a bit more background around the school and the characters! I am hoping in the following book(s) this will be the case and the first one is like an epilogue. I still enjoyed listening and think the idea is pretty awesome!
