A young mathematics student named Malcolm Malcolmson needs absolute quiet to study for his exams. He rents a gloomy old mansion in a remote town, ignoring the landlady’s warnings and the villagers’ refusal to speak of the place. The house has stood empty for decades, and it was once home to a hanging judge famous for his cruelty.
By night, enormous rats pour out of the wainscoting. One of them, huge and malevolent, with eyes that glow in the firelight, watches him from the great chair by the hearth and will not be driven away. Above it hangs an old portrait, and on the wall the alarm bell’s rope hangs down from the tower, a rope with a very dark history.
First published in 1891, The Judge’s House is the finest short story by Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula. It is a classic Victorian ghost story of mounting dread and one of the most chilling tales in the English gothic tradition.
