This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Description
"Narrators James Fouhey and Briggon Snow give stellar performances in this quiet YA romance.... Both narrators authentically capture the ups and downs of teen romance and keep listeners engaged." (AudioFile Magazine)
Lauren Shippen's The Infinite Noise is a stunning, original debut based on her wildly popular and award-winning podcast The Bright Sessions.
Caleb Michaels is a 16-year-old champion running back. Other than that his life is pretty normal. But when Caleb starts experiencing mood swings that are out of the ordinary for even a teenager, his life moves beyond "typical".
Caleb is an Atypical, an individual with enhanced abilities. Which sounds pretty cool except Caleb's ability is extreme empathy - he feels the emotions of everyone around him. Being an empath in high school would be hard enough, but Caleb's life becomes even more complicated when he keeps getting pulled into the emotional orbit of one of his classmates, Adam. Adam's feelings are big and all-consuming, but they fit together with Caleb's feelings in a way that he can't quite understand.
Caleb's therapist, Dr. Bright, encourages Caleb to explore this connection by befriending Adam. As he and Adam grow closer, Caleb learns more about his ability, himself, his therapist - who seems to know a lot more than she lets on - and just how dangerous being an Atypical can be.
"What if the X-Men, instead of becoming superheroes, decided to spend some time in therapy?" (Vox on The Bright Sessions)

Very sweet story in an uncertain storytelling
In no way am I sorry to have had bought this audio book. After listening to the Bright Sessions podcast and wanting a bit more about Caleb and Adam, this story was exactly what I was looking for.
But it came with the same inexperienced scenarisation that I found in the podcast. In both the story is great, but somehow told in a hesitant fashion, using only a handful of storytelling devices that become a bit repetitive at some point. For instance, in the book, the connector between two scenes is almost always an ellipsis, which make the narrative a bit disjointed, and lessen the impact of important events. Those feel like first books mistakes.
That being said, as I mentioned I really enjoyed the story itself, and if you’re not picky like me about cleverly crafted storytelling, you’ll most definitely have a good 9 hours :)

A MUST for Bright Sessions Lovers
I opted to listen to the audiobook, I thought it was only fitting since I fell in love with Adam/Caleb via podcast. I was so glad that Briggon Snow reprised his role of Caleb. This is a sweet background look into the goings-on of Cadam behind the scenes of the Bright Sessions. Made me relisten to the Bright Sessions. I missed these characters so much.
Even if you haven't listened to the Bright Sessions (highly recommend that too), it's still a great LGBTQ book for young adults.

Incredible but...
The book was hands-down incredible... until about 90% in. Then it just fizzled out. The characters got all this scary information, and absolutely nothing happened or was even done about it. It was so weird and such a missed opportunity. It was kind of like the author just got bored and said, “oh well, I’ll just wrap it up as quickly as possible with no resolution.” Kind of a bummer.

Eh one sided
Can you say kicked puppy syndrome?!? Caleb consistently treats Adam like dirt, never really EVER apologizes or suffers at all, all the negative emotional horror is from Caleb hurting Adam, but Adam constantly keeps making the effort and shows exactly why battered women think the way they do, which is how you can tell it’s a female author, a male author would give Adam a frikin backbone and make Caleb work to get him back, not just be ignored and treated like crap and than run back to Caleb, from the beginning where Adam is crushing hard on Caleb and caleb’s first description of Adam is an emo looser who has no friends, and he doesn’t get why Adam just doesn’t get over it.......I mean really?!? It’s not ya romance, it’s a novel about a depressed gay kid who gets treated like crap and ignored but keeps begging his straight boyfriend to take him back, oh and consistently gets bullied, coming from a gay kid, this story made me totally rethink any crushes I’ve had....so I guess there’s that lol

A lot of Emotions.... In a Good Way
Enjoyed this, the only draw back is how short it was. Look forward to more Bright session novels and to learn more about this universe that Shippen has created. I fell in love with the characters and kept wanting to know more. This is worth the read/listen.

Like I'm a kid again
This book brings me so much joy. It's like back then when I read my first book. All the emotions are so intense I caught myself laughing out loud and making comments as if Caleb and Adam could hear me. It feels real and personal. All in all this book just took me in from page one and the voice actors are so good it feels almost like hearing a friend tell a story instead of listening to an audiobook.
What got me most though were the deeply relatable and intimate topics. As someone with mental health issues, experiencing sensory overload AND depression, and also being a part of the LGBTQ community, I could relate to both Adam and Caleb on a level that even surprised me myself.
And even with all these heavy topics it never felt like too much. I could laugh, I could cry, I could get angry and it felt so good.
It's rare to get that in a book. Especially an audiobook.
Thank you for that.
I definitely highly recommend listening.

Stay strange!
Lovely, exciting, heart-warming! Wonderful to listen to as an audiobook, matches perfectly with the podcast experience. I love that Briggon Snow speaks Caleb again, and I definitely enjoyed James Fouhey as Adam although I missed the original voice actor a little.
The last fourth of the book is a little fast-paced, but that - in my eyes - hardly reduces the fun I had while listening to this.
Congratulations to Lauren Shippen for the wonderful words she found to describe emotions. As a social worker, I might even try to transfer this to my future counselling.
All in all, a wonderful book! Especially for people who listened to the original podcast, but certainly for everyone who thoroughly enjoys a teenage love story mixed with mental health issues and superpowers.
