Winner of the Audie Awards Audiobook of the Year 2013 and nominated for the Audie Awards Solo Narration of the Year 2013, The End of the Affair is written by British novelist Graham Greene and narrated by British actor Colin Firth. First published in 1951, this evocative novel has been adapted into two films by the same name in 1955 and again in 1999, as well as an opera. Set in London towards the end of World War II, it follows the ending of a love affair between a deeply religious, married woman and a writer at the outset of fame. Available now from Audible.

Description

Audie Award Winner, Audiobook of the Year, 2013.

Audie Award Nominee, Best Solo Narration, 2013.

Graham Greene's evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house.

Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King's Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release. The End of the Affair, set in London during and just after World War II, is the story of a flourishing love affair between Maurice Bendrix and Sarah Miles. After a violent episode at Maurice's apartment, Sarah suddenly and without explanation breaks off the affair.

This very intimate story about what actually constitutes love is enhanced by Mr. Firth's narration, who said "this book struck me very, very particularly at the time when I read it and I thought my familiarity with it would give the journey a personal slant. I'm grateful for this honor," Firth said when this production was recognized by the Audie Awards as Audiobook of the Year for 2013, "and grateful for the opportunity to narrate one of my favorite stories. A great novel told in the first person makes for the best script an actor could imagine. None better than The End of the Affair.... Theater and film each offer their own challenges and rewards, but narration is a new practice for me and the audiobook performance provides exhilarating possibilities for both actors and listeners. I'm thrilled to be involved in bringing this remarkable work of fiction to a wider audience, and thankful to Audible for offering me the opportunity to perform it and to engage with so many who share my passion for storytelling."

It's a wonderfull novel. we are transported by the struggled thoughts of Maurice and Sarah. their love affair is heartbraking. and thé friendship of Maurice towards Henry is moving. we are upset by the complexity of the mindset of these characters.
Thé soft and warm voice of Colin Firth charmed me all over this story. He led me in a Dreams journée. He is a wonderfull teller. Thank you very much Mr. Firth for your gorgeous performance.

Baptism of desire

I rate this tale of a woman who leaves her lover for God as Graham Green's masterpiece. Structurally it is sophisticated, framed as a novelist's first-person recollection of his affair with the wife of a civil servant, laced with flashbacks and with an extended section in her voice as he reads extracts from her stolen diary. I had to read it through again once I finished and found it much the richer once I understood the structure. The three-cornered drama is shot through with ironies and missed opportunities, with a tragic climax and an odd coda in which a supernatural element comes close to the surface. Some may find the overt religious themes off-putting but as a way into the big questions of life, love, and death it has never been equalled in Greene's opus. Colin Firth's reading - performance, really - is riveting throughout. His virtuosic variations of pacing and tone perfectly match the narrator's turmoil of mind. He effortlessly differentiates the characters with the subtlest shades of timbre and colouring. The minor characters sparkle, too, particularly the sentimental gumshoe Parkis. I can't resist re-quoting St Augustine's beautiful dictum "Time flows out of the future, which does not yet exist, into the present, which has no duration, into the past, which has ceased to exist." Time with this gem of an audiobook is well spent indeed.

Not just a story...

I thoroughly enjoyed this almost lyrical novel. The poison/passion drips from his pen as he writes, his heart splayed out honestly within the pages.

Excellent narration! Masterfully woven story!

Fascinating throughout, this is a novel by Graham Greene of love and jealousy and faith and how these bind people together. The narration by Colin Firth was a particular treat, as it brought human feeling and life to the novel as only he can. Bravo for this successful combination of story and storyteller!

As if it were lived by Colin himself

I even listened to it twice, so enjoyable it was to hear the story narrated by Colin with his great British accent and with so much personality as if it were the story of his own life.
Colin should continue specialising in narration as not many actors are capable of such a performance.

Love Story in Reverse

Of course I realize that I step on thin ice, when I dare to criticize an acclaimed masterpiece, but regardless of the perfect prose and the skillfully written book, I seriously struggle with the content.

The story is set in London during world war II and quite straight forward. Maurice Bendrix, a young, promising writer, has an adulterous affair with Sarah, the bored wife of Henry Miles, a career civil servant. Initially the affair is simply driven by sexual lust and desire, but as it continues, Bendrix and Sarah become more and more dependent on each other. While Sarah’s main intent is to make Bendrix happy, Bendrix increasingly suffers from insane jealousy. Instead of enjoying the limited time of their encounters, they get dragged into painful arguments and fights.

When a bomb blast nearly kills Bendrix, as he is with Sarah, she breaks off the affair with no apparent explanation. Mad with jealousy, Bendrix hires a private detective to track down the new lover. The detective gets hold of Sarah’s diary and Bendrix makes a painful discovery. Sarah was always faithful to him and she really loved him deeply, but during the bomb explosion she made a promise to God, to end the affair, if Bendrix would survive. Before the lovers can get back together, Sarah dies from pneumonia.

There seems to be a lot of Graham Greene in Bendrix and if so, the young author must have been quite a jerk. While Sarah becomes more and more a saint like creature, Bendrix’s unreasonable jealousy and aggressive hostility turns him into a repulsive and miserable character. In addition to that, his arrogant and derisive behavior towards the genuinely good natured Henry is despicable.

This novel is the last of Greene’s catholic novels and he cannot refrain himself from sprinkling some miraculous, Godly interventions into the events. Somehow this was overdoing it a little bit.

Amazingly read masterpiece

Just finished this audio book. I was a little afraid at first if Colin Firth might not be too great a star to do it justice: my feeling was always that the voice actor should completely blend into the background...but I was wrong: Firth reads this with feeling and with the appropriate distance to his own fame. The novel: a masterpiece unlike anything writren these days - very intimate toeards its characters. A book for writers, lovers, survivors. A book for the faithless. Greene turns hate against itself: the greater the hate, the greatet the damage of the hate hating itself. What remains is more love & more soul.

Good stuff

I loved Colin Firth's soothing voice, he delivers exceptionally, the inflections in his reading are most accurate.
The book id brilliantly written, loved every bit of up to the part where the mystery is being revealed. I wish there was more depth into Sarah 's relationship with her last "affair" but since the story is told from Bendrix' point of view, I assume it wasn't necessary. But still I wish he would have reacted more emotionally to the discovery... But then again he's British..
Nevertheless I utterly and completely love the style in which the book has been written, the keen observations and the subtle remarks, many of which I had come to perceive only by reading this the second time....
Should anyone from Audible read this: please make Colin Firth a regular :)

Again one of Mr Firth's masterpieces

So sad I've finished listening to it already. The plot is high-minded and full of psycological entanglements. Usually I don't listen to such heavy topics but as the narrator was so brilliant I couldn't stop. I will listen to it again either from the beginning or from in between. When is the next Firth audiobook due to come?

Confusing in the beginning

But as the story unravels, you feel with the main characters. Collin Firth is excellent.
