Ce roman, écrit quelques années après l'obtention du droit de vote des femmes en Angleterre, débute avec la décision de deux épouses blasées de louer une demeure en Italie en avril. S'y joindront deux autres locataires. Dans un cadre enchanteur, les sentiments et personnalités des résultats étonnants...
