Description

From the bestselling author of The Beekeeper’s Promise comes a gripping story of three young women faced with impossible choices. How will history - and their families - judge them?

Paris, 1940. With the city occupied by the Nazis, three young seamstresses go about their normal lives as best they can. But all three are hiding secrets. War-scarred Mireille is fighting with the Resistance; Claire has been seduced by a German officer; and Vivienne’s involvement is something she can’t reveal to either of them.

Two generations later, Claire’s English granddaughter Harriet arrives in Paris, rootless and adrift, desperate to find a connection with her past. Living and working in the same building on the Rue Cardinale, she learns the truth about her grandmother - and herself - and unravels a family history that is darker and more painful than she ever imagined.

In wartime, the three seamstresses face impossible choices when their secret activities put them in grave danger. Brought together by loyalty, threatened by betrayal, can they survive history’s darkest era without being torn apart?

not her best

the story was very interesting but dragged at may points. the repetition of the theory of mental illness coming from family past trauma over and over was really wearing. the voice and accent of the primary reader was really grating.

Oh my goodness...!

In every way this book is a literary classic. The reader gives it her heart. She accurately shares the author's character development, story tension, and balance. The historic details, spelled out so beautifully, form the foundation for the emotions, conversations, and actions of the characters. I am moved to purchase the actual book for my own library. I was moved to laughter and tears by the sheer intensity of the vision in my mind's eye. I wonder...if faced with similar circumstances, would I be so brave?

A little hard to follow

Although this book was a little difficult to follow, it was another great glimpse into history. It's hard to hear what people had to endure during the war. It makes one appreciate their sacrifices.

Memorable

This book will stay with me for a very long time. I moved between tears a smiles so often - the lines between kinship, love and horror where very close. I can only imagine how harrowing the research must have been.

Disjointed

I listened to it and didn't read it and perhaps this is why I found it hard to follow and disjointed as it jumps back and forth in the timeline

Courageous young French ladies

Barely out of their teens and caught up in one of worlds worst time and events. Good character development and great support systems. No profanity or sex which gives this book a 10
