Description

The inspirational teachings in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the popular Japanese martial art of Aikido, a mind-body discipline he called the "Art of Peace", which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life - in personal relationships, as we interact with society, and at work and in business.

This edition is a much-expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a wealth of new material, including a biography of Ueshiba; an essay by John Stevens that presents Ueshiba's views on "The Art of War versus the Art of Peace"; newly translated doka, didactic "Poems of the Way"; and Ueshiba's own calligraphies.

Highly recommended!

If you are at conflict with yourself on trying to be a warrior, but not filled with rage and anger. This book is very enlightening and helps you understand the way to pushing beyond that conflicting ideology.

Good intentions

The overall mood and message of the book is very positive; yet, the ideas are conveyed very non-specifically. For example "pay respect to all 8 directions of the earth". What is this supposed to mean? (sure, N, S, E, W, SE, SW, NE, NW..., but how do you "pay respects" to a cardinal direction? Reflect upon it? In what way? Send good intentions?). The book is FULL of vague directives/instructions/recommendations. I typically am quite good at finding <<meaning>> in places ( knowledge, sentences. discourse) where most remain puzzled and lost. The book DOES contain many sentences that are quite clear and the story of Aikido and it's founder is quite interesting but I think the book as a whole will be not easily fully grasped my most people.

Peace is not an accident. Peace is a choice.

The most far-seeing warrior resolves conflict before harm even becomes an option.
The most far-seeing healer resolves imbalances before the slightest evidence of symptoms.

Beautifully done

This book is a perfect balance of history, wisdom and comments on technique.

It is the best collection of O Sensei Ueshiba's quotes I have come across.

I highly recommend it.

The father of Aikido.

This book delves into the reasoning behind the creation of the martial art. Well and somewhat indepthly portrayed. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a better understanding of the martial arts which they find intriguing, interesting or somewhat fascinating.

Be amung friends

A friend recently invited me to do Aikido, there were both young and old training together, despite feeling uncomfortable, it was inviting and a very nice energy. I could see this is not about street savvy fighting, if I saw a knife I'd run and suggest you do too. Anyway, I saw there is more to this the meets the eye. Listen to this audiobook and you might have better idea what it's about, maybe more so than some.
