All for the chance to get back at a handful of people. It isn’t as if they didn’t deserve it either. They had driven him from his home. Chased him physically from the very guild house itself. Max was a professional soldier, and extremely good at his job. Right up until it killed him. At the moment of his death, he meets Hildi the Valkyrie, and is given three options. Serve Odin in Valhalla as one of the Einherjar, fighting each day and celebrating each night until the battle of Ragnarok. Accept his death as final, and end his existence. Or be reincarnated as a Battleborne on a random unknown world. Max chooses to gamble! To live a new life, whatever that might entail.
Description
Reports to write, forms to fill, coffee to drink, leads to run down.
Gus’s life was a tedium and boredom he’d grown comfortable with. One that he sought out after he’d come back from his tour of duty.
A detective in the paranormal investigations department. A job he could work day in and day out in relative peace. One cold and forgotten cup of coffee at a time.
It was an environment that made some sense to him. At least in comparison to civilian life where almost nothing did. On top of that, it gave him a chance to hide what he was from the rest of the world.
An apex predator that made the entirety of the paranormal world fear him. His very species was often killed as soon as they were found out.
By government and citizen alike.
He’s a Boogieman.
A name that made humans laugh, and vampires curse. It was a strange life to be sure.
Now though, Gus’s stable non-life is about to be kicked over. Whether he likes it or not, he’s about to be handed a case that’s going to mess up his already screwed up life.

I made it
This was a tough listen. I do really like the narrator though. The story was very lacking and juvenile sometimes. It almost seemed to be appealing to young teenage boys with all the sexual innuendo. Seems sort of insulting overall to women’s intelligence. Anyway it’s just my opinion but hopefully I’ll save you a credit you can use for a better book

Mixed feelings about this book
There is quite a lot to like about this book. Many of the characters are interesting as is the story. I mostly enjoyed going along for the ride. There are two area of the book that were very irritating for me however.
First is this gets very close to being a harem novel, and if there is a sequel it is sure to fall into that category. Now personally, I don't care how many partners a person has, but the "Every woman longs for the MC and they are all perfectly fine with the MC having multiple women" often kills any interest I have in a story. And don't think me one sided in this. I didn't like Laurell K. Hamilton's Merideth Gentry serie's harem aspect and orgy scenes either, even though it had a fascinating story idea. Although this book teeters on the edge of this, it doesn't quite, yet, fall down into the pool.
The second big problem I have with the story is its a hidden world urban fantasy but the federal government is not only aware of the supernatural, but has agencies in place to deal with them. Now, if it was just the Feds, maybe I could deal with it. But quite a few higher level (captains) police also seem aware of the supernatural and the federal agencies involving them AND there are state level agencies (including police) that deal with them. Am I seriously supposed to believe there are all these people working for supernatural local and federal agencies, all of which have budgets that have to be authorized and paid for by committees which also include non-supernatural agents, and somehow in the modern age this is kept hidden? Even with the Orwellian control these agencies seem to be able to exert over media (and somehow never get revealed) this really stuck in my craw.
But, if you don't mind (or you like) harem type novels and the massive (deep stateish) government cover-up doesn't bother you then this is easily a four star, maybe even a four and a half star book.
Even disliking aspects of it as I do, the author made me interested in the characters (with one exception) and kept me wanting to see where the story and the characters were going. So I will pick up the next novel when that is available.

Meh
I gave this a shot because I like paranormal noir type books. I got half way through and lost interest. It's a tame harem-style story without much real conflict. Conflicted, broody, evidently super attractive and over-powered MC with dark past starts collecting super attractive, over-powered women. The whole government agency to police paranormals that live amongst us was interesting but ultimately not enough to keep me interested.

Meet our new hero Gustavus (Gus) Hellstorm
This is the first story that I have read/listened to by William D. Arand. From reading some of the reviews, this world is in the vein of his other works. For me it was a unique story because of the different characters in the paras (paranormal) community.
Gustavus (Gus) Hellstorm is a boogieman. The boogieman is the frightening character from your nightmare. It is the ultimate apex predator. It feeds off your fears, can mark you (as in this woman is mine), and fear scent you, which can be permanent or temporary. How fear scenting works is not fully described. I found that disappointing because I missed the nuance of the meaning.
Melody Lark is a contractor. Melody has seven different colors on her face. It makes her a rainbow contractor which is a rarity. It takes a very strong personality to deal with all the emotions and obligations that come with the contracts. The contracts correspond to an emotion or attribute: violet-giving, indigo-fulfilment, yellow-empathy, green-pain and suffering, orange-intellectual, blue-helps recovers from injury, red-sex. With that range of emotions Melody needs constant stimulation and challenges. She is known and The Lark. She thrives on action. Why she became a contractor or the process to become a contractor is not explained.
Gus is a detective for the PID, which is the police department for the pars. He is never physically described. All we are told is that his hair is reddish-brown. From the narrator’s voice I pictured him as 6 foot 275 pounds and all muscled. We get more information about the physical attributes, attractiveness or ethnicity of the women in his life.
This is a world were pars live in hiding while living with humans. ***spoiler*** They can do this because of a mask. This mask has runes which hides their true features. The mask is tied to their driver’s license. Nothing was said on how kids under driving age are masked.
Gus works the swing shift and for PID department that is morning hours. Most pars action is in the evenings. Gus is a humbled and dedicated. He solves cases using standard police procedures. He is tired from his past where he had to be the apex predator to survive. Now he is just content with what he does. There is action of the paranormal type and normal police gun fights.
The characters are interesting, funny (especially Melody) and intelligent. Each character goes through growth and change that enhances their appeal, even Trish who just cleans the office. The plot is filled with surprises. This is a 14-hour story and I was captivated from the beginning until the end. I even purchased the Kindle so I could read when I could not listen.
Even though I liked the narrator’s voice for Gus, for some of the characters it was annoying.
Even with the disappointment I discussed above, I will try another book by the author. I cannot wait until the next book.

Good fluff story for this genre, poor performance
I like to listen to this type of fluff fantasy story while I do jobs around the house, etc. This is a good one in terms of plot and characters. It was tough for me to get past the horrible voices of the narrator, though. The male voices, in particular, are stereotypical to the point of being cartoon-like. If the series continues on Audible, I hope they change out the narrator.

It's Okay
I'll start out with the positive, I liked the world created by the author, that there are supernatural beings living normal lives around us. However the idea that a third of people are supernatural and normal people haven't figured that out is somewhat unbelievable, but I suspended my disbelief, this is a fantasy novel after all. I also quite liked the hero Gus.
Now for the negative. Definitely a male fantasy, every woman that Gus interacts with regularly (besides his mother) is super hot and wants to jump into his bed. Every. Single. Woman. I kept thinking "really? another one?". I know this is a "harem book" but I still found the female interest unbelievable. Also I found Melody particularly annoying, she is the instigator of the harem and basically she meets him once insists she is in love with Gus and moves in with him against his will and eventually he just gives in, it felt like she just wore him down, not that he was actually reciprocating. For a chunk of the book at the end Melody is not around and I found it a relief, although it was also odd she would not be in on the final showdown. I liked his normal partner and wished there was more of her and Gus working together. Then there is harem member #3, how do I complain about her without giving spoilers, all I can say is there is a character that she comes in at the end and is overly powerful and basically figures everything out, it was abrupt and felt unmotivated. I also found the motivation for the plot really unbelievable, I understand what the bad guys want in the end, but the way they are going about it is EXTREMELY counterproductive.

Adolescent Sexual Fantasy
I passed by this book several time because of the over sexualized cover. Then, based on high rating, I thought I’d give it a try. At first I enjoyed the story. Interesting world building. Then, it went down hill with gorgeous, sexy women who only wanted to build a harem with the big, strong boogie man. GAG!!!
The narration made it worse with all the male characters sounding like stereotypical dumb jocks. I couldn’t finish the book, and that says a lot.
Based on some of the writing, it appears this author has talent. If he wrote this when he was 13 yo, he gets a pass. Otherwise, he’s wasting his gift. I hope he matures, for his own sake and that of his craft.

Could have been really good
The concept of a boogeyman being a main character is a total blast, but sadly it doesn't reach it's potential. While don't having issues with the harem concept it was constantly getting more...starchy with the women. At one point it was just awkward how they all "fell into place".
The speaker did a great job, but sometimes it was difficult to interpret whether it was inner monolog or actual dialog of the main character.

good story & good characters, lacking protagonist
Amazing job by the voice actress. The story was interesting and balanced detective story, romance and world building very well. All important characters were interesting and written believeable. My only complaint is that they made the protagonist out to be such a monster but nearly every time when the monster would've been useful he didn't use it especially at the climax where it felt as if he was absolutely useless, nearly every good idea or effective action came from someone else in the climax.
