Description

War is coming!

The government has accelerated their super soldier program. Their new Virtual Reality system is the perfect tool to train soldiers for the coming war. There is a shortage of enlisted men and women that possess the "talent". Everyone from athletes to professional gamers must be sorted and vetted. Humanity is on the line.

Lucius is one of those lucky few selected to participate in Codename: Freedom, a new game that promises to push Virtual Reality to the ultimate level. Unknown to him, the Game Developers have no time to waste. With the pain dampeners turned off and an army ready to attack the new players as they enter Codename: Freedom, he will have to ask himself an unexpected question. Is his dream worth suffering for? Will he quit, go mad, or find the motivation to fight when it becomes painfully clear that this is far from just another game?

wow

I love the lit rpg genre but I was thinking I was getting too familiar with it's tropes and couldn't be surprised... this book showed me the genre still has a few in it for me. This new twist as far as connecting the real bodies of the players to their avatar adds a sense of danger not always there in a genre where main characters can die then just come back. I listened to this in one sitting and loved every minute of it. That can't be said with many other books. Five stars without hesitation and am looking forward to book two.

Great LitRPG Book

I loved the book. I found the unique game mechanics the writer used for the world interesting and I want to see where he goes with them. The characters have more depth than a lot of hack and slash LitRPG books our there. The protagonist had a nice realistic feel with him not being some overpowered player that would always just get what he wants. I eagerly await the next book.

This is one of my favorite LITRPG novels now.

Took a chance and I rolled a 20. I didn't expect this one to be good but I was diffidently entertained from beginning to end. The struggles of an aspiring gaming saleb adds an interesting twist to the plot. Just give it a shot if you are into the genre you won't be sorry.

As stellar as I imagined

Exactly how I heard and pictured it in my mind as I read the book. McLeod Andrews did a stellar job bringing the book to life and making everyone believeable. As I was listening to it I could feel myself swinging the sword, I could feel the thump of me feet on the ground. This has quickly become one of my top 5 audiobooks.

I will highly recommend this to anyone looking for a thrillseeking, heart pounding adventure.

Repetitive narrative " feelings"

The book had a good concept. Good characters and nice world building. But they choose to make everything about feelings. Like a drama instead of a book about gaming. Focusing on getting injured and how that made you feel. How others felt. It nothing wrong with feelings but it prolonged scenes way to much. Could been 4 hours instead of 9. I felt like after 9 hrs the story could advanced so much with another author but only 4 days passed. Then the author would prolong the scene with info he just gave like the character status for 5 minutes. Explaining what fast twitch muscle mean n etc. Almost like he lacked imagination and wanted to set it up for another book. Which he did

I have nothing negative to say

I liked it and cannot think of a single bad thing go say about the book. So I recommend it as an engrossing listen. The gravity given to pain is a bit wierd. Most books dont give actual death the same weight and gravity that this book gives transient physical pain. But then again torture is often treated as a crime well above execution. So it makes logical sense. It just feels really wierd. Pain is usually treated as a complete non issue if there is no associated long term injury. So its wierd and different.

Big Brother is watching again

a new game is launching. Once you enter, the rules come to you as you go. Primarily physics based gaming and very earth world like abilities. No magic. However I do feel the future books will show something of magic like affects possibly through psionics. good story through out. Battles descriptions or less than high detail but still captivating as the reader wonders in attempts to imagine this particular rules set of game mechanics.
gamers are aware that changes from some baseline game must be made when writing it all. This is due to wonderful copyrights protecting other peoples works.
This story is another example of how a writer has taken experience from online MMO‘s and applied it as a secret military experiment.

Good book.

I saw negative reviews on this book complaining about there being to many “feelings” being discussed or that the MC was weak for having a hard time getting over his fears but they could not have been further from the truth. Yes the MC had some fears to conquer but damn he went from being just a gamer to pretty much a full on warrior feeling every single scratch and bump. All in all a great first book keep them coming.

Great debut by a new author!

This book puts an interesting spin on the trapped in a game theme in that the players are choosing to stay through hellish circumstances for potential rewards instead of being physically unable to leave. The over arching plot is hinged at, and I'm intrigued to find out more! I really enjoyed the competition aspects, social dynamics, and how pain in the game is treated.

I really enjoyed listening to this book, and, as always, Macleod Andrews does a superb job narrating!
