    Why must it be abridged?

I love this series. Grover Gardner does a perfect job with the narration. When I first heard his voice I thought, "this guy sounds like a smart alec, know-it-all, annoying geek." Since that's pretty much Andy Carpenter in a nutshell it works well and even though Andy is all these things he's still a very likable character. I will never understand the purpose of abridging a book like this. It's not like it's Pillars of the Earth length and they aren't saving any money on CD's when it's sold on Audible.com . If a book needs editing it should be done before it's published. Abridged versions deny the fan base their reasonable expectation to hear the book as the author intended. I know I turned a review into a rant against publishers (for that I apologize) but it's really frustrating to have to pay good money for only part of the story, or interrupt a series by buying the print version and not be able to listen to it during the long commute.

    Fair abridgment

I really hate abridged books. This one, although relatively well done, still leaves the reader wondering about some of the missing bits. Great series, and an entertaining read. I just want it all.

    These should never be abridged!

It' s too bad the unabridged version is not available. Not being from anywhere near New Jersey, I can't verify the accuracy of the accent, but the narrator does a wonderful job of taking me there and giving life to the characters. These stories are both funny and intensely serious. This one gets you right on the edge of your seat, and then gives you a laugh. The stories are completely serious and are no joke, but the main character's sense of humor and manner are wonderful relief from the tension. He does take the serious seriously, but it is balanced with his self-deprecating sense of humor. He exasperates judges and mystifies the press.
He and his dog Tara go through life walking each other and watching every basketball game on TV. There is a love interest in and around his life and they make an incomplete triangle. You'll have to read it ti figure that one out!

Review by a golden retriever fan

I really enjoy the narration of this and the previous Bury the Lead. Being a golden retriever owner, I am especially appreciative of Andy's love of his golden, Tara. My only complaint about this audio book was that it was abridged, which took away some of its color.

    TERRIFIC!

David Rosenfelt writes the most entertaining novels I've heard in awhile. And the narrator - perfection. I can't even imagine listening to anyone else narrate Rosenfelt's books. I've listened to all of his and wish there were more of his on Audible! Sometimes I'll be listening in my car and I'll burst out laughing. Definitely an author I will continue to follow.

    Another in a great series

David Rosenfelt's character, Andy Carpenter is wonderful. This lawyer/investigator/detective is clever and amusing. The interpretation by reader Grover Gardner is outstanding. Between the drama, chuckles, thrills, and semi frustrated romantic interests, one can't stop listening. The cast of regular characters is unforgettable and, thankfully, Rosenfelt cleverly weaves them into each story in the series. Perhaps most reassuring, Carpenter's neuroses are steadied by his faithful Lab, Tara.

    More Big Fun !

Another fun contemporary mystery from David Rosenfelt. G.G. is perfect as the first-person narrator, and you will also enjoy Rosenfelt's "Bury the Lead" which preceeds this book in the series.
Like others who have enjoyed these, I wish Audible would offer
his two other books and would present them Unabridged.
    Still...delightful!

    Total entertainment

Since my first read of Rosenfelt I have been a fan. Great story line, witty and funny. After my first book I purchased all of the available CD's and even bought his first two books that are not on CD. All of the characters in the book are colorful and unique. The narrator fits into this role so perfectly that I was actually able to visualize Andy Carpenter. I can't wait until the author's next book. This was such a great break from the usual mystery novel. The humor is what makes it stand apart from the standard murder and courtroom dramas. Bravo David Rosenfelt!

    He is my popular writer

This is my 3rd book from David Rosenfelt I already read. I know the style, I know the humor and he is still entertaining me. I am looking forward for his other novel.
