    Description

Everyone enjoys peace and tranquility, and Victor Bayne is no exception. He goes to great lengths to maintain a harmonious home with his partner, Jacob. Although the cannery is huge, it's grown difficult to avoid the elephant in the room...the elephant with the letters FPMP scrawled on its hide.

Once Jacob surrendered his PsyCop badge, he infiltrated the Federal Psychic Monitoring Program. In his typical restrained fashion, he hasn't been sharing much about what he actually does behind its vigilantly guarded doors. And true to form, Vic hasn't asked. In fact, he would prefer not to think about the FPMP at all, since he's owed Director Dreyfuss an exorcism since their private flight to PsyTrain.

While Vic has successfully avoided FPMP entanglement for several months, now his debt has finally come due.

Even better than the book alone.

I'm never going to be able to sing "Row, row, row your boat. " again without giggling. Gomez Pugh definitely brought his A-game to this narration,...and that's on top of Jordan's A-game for this tale.

    Superb!

I loved this version better than the book. Gomez Pugh did a fantastic narration! This took me 4 days to finish because it is quite a long one. Overall I definitely would recommend this to you especially if you are a fan of Jordan Castillo's books.

    Jordan and Gomez totally rock!

I love this series - Jordan Castillo-Price is an amazing author and keeps the story moving along - never a dull moment! Gomez Pugh has not only Victor's voice down pat, but does an amazing job with all the additional characters as well! If you haven't read (or listened) to the books in this series, do yourself a favor and get started!

The Dynamic Duo, Price and Pugh, has struck again!

Gomez, you rock! You make listening to a book so enjoyable that I wish it was a job I could do for a living. Your interpretation of Vic's inside voice is so spot on that I think you might possibly be a close relative.
Jordan, you rockette! I am so glad that you are sharing your incredible creative talent with us and am also so darn thrilled that you'll be continuing Vic's story! Now the waiting begins....

The scariest book yet in the series!

Oh my God! I don’t know who frustrates me more in this book, Vic or Lisa? 🙄 Please do us all and yourself a favor Vic! Let that crazy woman goooooooo! 😤 While you are calling her your best friend and being obstinate about maintaining your relationship with her, she calls you “her friend” (that’s right, you are only A friend! Not THE best friend 🤬) and she has no regard whatsoever for you and Jacob. Oh my god! I can’t even start on how much I wanna throttle her! 😡 How can a character gets worse and worse with every book in the series? Seriously she and Dreyfuss so deserve each other and the day wouldn’t come soon enough if I never see that crazy woman again in this series! 🙄 *Whewwwwww* Okay .. enough ranting. That being said, although Lisa sent me on a psychotic murderous rage and the mystery in this story was quite predictable, I find myself still enjoying this book much more than my fellow bookworms. And I have to admit that the creepiness and scariness of this book far surpasses all the previous books. The last scene gave me chills and goosebumps. The reasons this book still amused me .. although it wasn’t the best in the series, this book was essential for the change of tide in the upcoming books. This signifies how Vic has decided to walk a new path and I like it. ☺️ Second, I love the relationship between Vic and Jacob getting stronger and stronger! And kudos for that very hot smut in the middle. 🔥 (Though only Vic can think about most ridiculous things while Jacob is on his knees in front of him. I find that endearing and hilarious. 😂) I’m happy that Vic might find a new best friend soon. (Nope, I’m not going to spoil who .. you gotta find out yourself 😁) And I’m satisfied that loose ties from the previous books including the GhosTV dilemma was neatly ended in this book. It gives me a satisfying closure. Again, Gomez Pugh did an excellent excellent job of narrating the hell out of this book. 👏 I must say I’m more excited for the upcoming books in the series because my next listen will be PsyCop briefs (I’m dying to get Jacob’s PoV .. oh daddy please! 🤣😉), and Crash’s story (Well, he’s been proving his worth steadily so I’ll finally decide whether he’ll redeem himself completely or not 😏) and I’d love to see Vic and Jacob finally working together at “Agent Bayne”. That being said, I gotta end my review here because I can’t wait long enough to get delicious little treat “PsyCop briefs”. 😌 4 Jacob will protect Vic against anything stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Wonderful audio performance

Vic is still grumpy but growing and spreading his wings. One of the few first person series that I really, really love.

    Perfect ending

Love, love, LOVE this series! This was a perfect ending, with just the right amount of "there could be more" sprinkled in. Vic & Jacob are my dream couple and will miss them greatly.
Jordan Castillo Price has done a marvellous job with this series.

    Holds up to a re-read

Just listened to Spook Squad again in a series re-read. Compelled to increase my rating from 4 to 5 stars. Of all the series, the elements of this installment stuck with me the most, in a good way. Rereading knowing which surprises were coming was surprisingly satisfying because this book is excellently crafted. There are twists and turns with almost every major and secondary character. Lisa is camping in Vic and Jacob’s loft. Ziggler takes time off but still contributes. Carolyn is annoyed but still keeps in touch, Con is puppetmastering at full throttle, Laura likes sneaking hot dogs for lunch and saving manatees. Richie is both pestilential and insightful. Vic supporting Richie even when frustrated makes me like him more. Crash smudges V&J’s home, helps his store neighbor, and reunites with an ex. We meet several other skilled FPMP agents and they play with the GhostTV. The whole growing cast has needed talents yet is getting something from every direction. It’s great to have such a well realized ensemble cast. The author guides the reader through a well choreographed dance to discombobulate the plot and sort desired changes & happenings from the undesired ones. And to cause some trouble and ectoplasm. Then [a bunch of spoilers happen which I won’t reveal] so people rally to work together and minimize fallout from bad trouble. it wraps up as Happily (Enough) For Now where appropriate, which is very satisfying. My catnip is series characters who build up community/ found-family and this happens throughout the series and even more so in this book. Love it. I do think it works as a stand-alone for all there is extra satisfaction for series readers. I like it enough that I would suggest it to readers new to the author. There is a bunch of detail carried through from prior books, some of which run into plot and others are more like easter eggs. I think things are explained well enough for new readers without slowing the pace for regulars. Quibbles: A couple details with minor characters/ secondary arcs are insufficiently resolved, but iirc those get their own book(s) so the temporary landing pad in this denouement is all good, and a bit glittery. (I suspect I had docked a star for Vic not checking in with Crash after his phone dies, but in fairness, there was a lot going on.) Carl, as the stoic Black assistant, sometimes feels a little tokeny, but he at least gets slightly more to do on page. Worldbuilding: Rereading this in 2020 while being forcibly reminded that ACAB (at least when in aggregate), this book thankfully won’t much challenge that, and even the “good”/well meaning cops/feds aren’t squeaky clean. All the characters have good and bad days. But the ones we hang with at least try to work for justice. Seeing that complexity helps. There is an increased discussion of which psy talents exist and how they vary, as filtered through Vic’s POV. Vic has finally started to improve his psychic skillset rather than just stumble along. Accordingly, the reader is brought into all the findings and new possibilities pf the psy abilities and how they manifest. There are well crafted layers. So far, it seems internally consistent through both book and series. It’s a reliable construct to come back to. Steam: Med low. There are a couple delightfully assertive M/M scenes on page that are sexy while also helping the guys either decompress from stress in life and work, or focus their attention. The author deftly makes the loving a solid plot piece. But the chippendales puzzle might have more overall scenes! I really enjoy how the author uses Jacob and Vic’s couplehood and togetherness as a vital storytelling element. It makes to book stronger and more relatable. Narration: G.Pugh does a great job narrating this series and crafting voices for the ever expanding ensemble cast. I never feel lost about who is doing what where & when. Sometimes audio seems less tethered to some scenes but not here. I find it easy to listen at 1.3X speed. Quality work, Quality sound.
